7,7:On the nose, of course, sugar cane is very strong, but juicy and tasty, we quickly notice brine and some olive, agricole spicy and smoky, as it is a bit roasted and gently metallic, becomes slightly pastry, with sweet spices and honeyed.
As we air it a bit dried banana, almost candied like banana marshmallow surprises us, it is a bit mineral now and floral, as flowery and gently woody.
7,5:On the palate, the attack is soft and juicy with sugar cane, we find similar notes as on the nose, as with roasted wood, with some vegetal-olive, brine, spiciness, very agricole characteristics are present, is smoky and mineral, dried banana with slight pastry and honey note continue here also, as becomes a bit dry after a while and a touch of astringency, iodine and flowery.
7,2:The finish is medium length, with sugar cane, dry, a bit woody, still mineral, slightly fruity.
This rum is stereotypical in the best way to me. It has an amazing caramel taste without being overly sweet. It has only minimal burn and is easy to drink. It is neither oily nor watery but somewhat in the middle with s very smooth mouthfeel. As a Cuban rum I don’t expect it to surprise me with taste notes like an agricole, it tastes like I expected it and then a bit better.
The bottle I have was purchased in Colombia as a gift for me. The first nose has a very light bourbon aroma with a hint of Carmel. The alcohol fume is slight. The first taste is one of spice, followed by very light fruit and finishes with oak and a bit of vanilla. The finish is very dry and lasts for just a brief time. This is very easy to sip but not complex. My bottle comes in at 35% ABV so it is weaker. Grateful for the gift and for the experience, but I wouldn’t search it out.
red fruit blast on first sniff, port wine, cinnamon, vanilla, burnt sugar, coconut
palette - tropical fruits with sour veil, spicy spice, pepper
finish - bitter-sour fruitiness, bitterness lasts, really warming spicy end
Its first glass from bottle, i think it needs more time to breathe and open up
Liked it. Lots of aromas, quite sweet. Tasted at Chamarel for 200rs the glass.. Definitely with it. But 100€ the bottle this is quite expensive for what you get. Like all Chamarel products.
Tested at my home against Don Papa, Dictador 20, Flor de Cana Gran Reserva No. 7, Ron Zacapa XO Solera Gran Reserva Especial. Bolivar Reserva 8 was the winner. I went back to Total Wine for a second bottle and was told that it won a blind taste test there as well. It pairs well with my evening cigar. Enjoy.
Baie des Tresors - that sounds good. I like that rum before tasting because of his name :-).
An agricole from Martinique. White, clear, not aged, without cask influences :
Plein Soleil - would like to surprise you with 54 % ABV.
Very nice bottle, like a big perfume bottle. All in all a very good first impression.
Nose : nothing sharpness, very smooth, nothing burns or bites in the nose. The 54 % are not noticeable. Floral and fruity notes, of course sugar cane in front. A little lychee, banana, lime.
Very, very pleasant and similar to a good Cachaca.
Palate : okay, the 54 % are coming with power and with a little sharpness. Unfortunately the sharpness pushes the fruity notes into the background. They have no chance to develop. When the sharpness is gone, the fruit is also dead. Some undefined herbal notes stay in mouth.
Finish : long, warm, very intense and full of herbs
Conclusion : the best thing is the nose. For a white unaged rum with 54%, it is really surprisingly mild, smooth and tasty.
However, I prefer the barrel-aged rums because they simply offer more interesting flavors. Nevertheless, a must for every rum lover because you can experience the real origin without any barrel influences. For less than €40, it is definitely a clear recommendation.
Addition : I tried it with an ice cube (see the image). Mmmhhh. The palate is much better, because there is no sharpness any longer. I can taste now apricot and pear. Of course sugar cane and the bitterness of the lime is in the back. Try it !
It initially seemed like a whisky, it improved over time and is the only one that has maintained a good taste over time opening after opening
The aroma is sharp alcoholic. There is a lot of burnt sugar in the taste. Also taste of raw wood and minimal oiliness hint at a slight aging. In cocktails or sipping it doesn`t stand up to competition. .,.,.,.,. Аромат резкий спиртовой. Во вкусе много жжёного сахара. Привкус сырой древесины и минимальная маслянистость намекают на небольшую выдержку. В коктейлях и в чистом виде не выдерживает конкуренции.
Having tasted Ron Amazona whilst in Mallorca recently, I found it an incredibly easy to drink Rum.
The 53% abv was welcome, but the ease of drinking, belies the high content.
It smells very fragant and has a sweetness that I wouldn't normally choose, however, for under 20 Euros, it went down so well, I bought back 3 bottles from Duty Free.
Not the best Rum by far, but certainly worth a tipple in my opinion.
rated the FDC 12 at 7. Tried the 18 and gave it an 8. So not surprising this is a solid 7. What I am surprised at is the "eco" tag and additional 3 years is going to cost an additional $20 in Alberta....almost 50% more than the 12 year and almost the same amount as the 18. Kudos to the FDC marketing department but is NOT enough of a sensory difference for the extra $$. Cheers
Szóval részemről maradok a fitalabb tételnél.
just catching up on the streaming comments and stumbled onto this. I've been sipping this over ice for 40 years and never read the bottle. Thought this was a variation of my classic downstairs...till I went and looked at the bottle. Made with rum - mind blown! Never knew this important detail! I like it cold....really cold. If it was a slurpee flavor it would be perfect. As much as I enjoy the sip, this is one of the few I flashback to some of my first cocktails. It should be a staple in everyone's bar. there are newer brands but they call it "classic" for a reason! Cheers.
This has an Appleton vibe. I suspect there's not too much pot still in this blend.
Smell is pretty mild. I get fermented apples and caramel under a touch of cleaning fluid.
Taste is all that, with a bit of fire tempered by a good dose of added sugar. The finish is all banoffee pie.
Hey, it cost £20. I got no complaints. I will pass it round the dance floor Saturday night, and I'm sure no-one will mind!
I can't work out the smell in this! My mind keeps going to tequilla, but I really can't bring back the memory.
Taste is very dry, mild, wood.
Doesn't really taste much like a rum to me, but can't really work out what it does do.
I am always looking to expand my rum collection. Now, on holiday in the Cote D'azur, there was a rum from Martinique in the shop. An old French area, so made from freshly pressed sugar cane. Bought a bottle for 24 euros. 3 year old rum. Smell is fruity, taste is fruit a bit of lightly smoked wood, and a little caramel. All in all not a bad rum for this price
The aroma is very pleasant, smooth, and unmistakably Dominican. It’s rounded, with a complex depth.
As for the flavor, it's wonderfully rich and velvety, with the prominent note being salted caramel on my palate. The buttery toffee notes are lush, with a decadent “extra butter” sort of feel. There are also an intriguing hints reminiscent of Cuban cigars. While not salty per se, this rum carries a savory, slightly "salty" twang. Additionally, the flavor offers a delightful and quite clear mix of sultanas and molasses, with a whisper of orange. Every drop from my glass packs a punch of flavor, whilte still being quite mellow and smooth. The more I indulge, the more the complexity reveals itself.
The finish unveils clear tones of oak, somehow reminiscent of "Innis & Gunn" ale. It’s slightly malty, just sweet enough (but not at all overly sweet) to maintain balance, with no trace of smoke. The finish is long, warm, and layered with rich notes of sultanas and oak, delivering a complex and beautiful aftertaste.
In summary, this rum is a standout, far exceeding my expectations – especially at this price point. I confidently rate it an 8, regardless of price. While it may not be the best rum I’ve ever tasted (there are also “9s” and “10s”, reserved for exceptional quality regardless of price), the value here is undeniable. At only $43 (as of September 2024 from Systembolaget), it offers an absolutely remarkable bang for the buck. In comparison, I used to think that Plantation XO provided the best "value for money" in the world. That's still great, but Imperial Onyx is even cheaper - and dare I say different (no coconut, not as complex), but every bit as good.
In summary: buy a bottle, savor it – and then make sure to stock up. You’ll want to keep this one on hand at all times. Just as a bonus, it won’t cost you a fortune to do so.

Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
