Philippines | Aged | 40% ABV
Don Papa Small Batch Rum is produced by the Bleeding Heart Rum Company on the southern island of Negros in the Philippines. The rum is distilled from molasses, then aged for over 7 years in American oak barrels, and lastly charcoal filtered.
The name Don Papa rum was inspired by Papa Isio, a leader of the Philippine revolution against the Spanish who led his island to independence before joining the main revolutionary movement.

Plus points for its distinctive taste, it is really unique. When I let it breathe and forget its is branded as a rum, I can drink it with some pleasure. The sugar level is surprisingly low 20g/l. The smell is strong vanilla, ice cream and sweet cherries, it is misleadingly sweet, but the taste profile is only slightly sweet, cherries, vanilla, honey, and some hints of wood, with rather dry aftertaste. The base rum is almost non present, the rum itself should be branded as spiced. I do not prefer spiced rums, but this one is interesting.
I got this rum as a gift for father's day. The nose is very sweet, like the vanilla extract you use for desserts. The taste is completely different, still sweet but much less than one could expect. Hints of Mandarin or orange. The taste disappears very quickly. Think there are chemical flavours added. In the end it's a drinkable rum which leaves some doubts anyways.
And I loved it. Changed my view of rum (taste change) and how I like to drink it. Full of interesting flavours and cracking aroma
Classic Don Papa bottle with a nice label. Supplied in a tube or bare. Due to the nice tube, I recommend paying extra.
The bottle has a wooden cap with a real cork. The color is darker amber and due to its age, the rum was probably colored with caramel.
Vanilla can be smelled when opened. It is dominant in the scent. Then there are caramel, oranges, a little honey and gingerbread spices. I didn't feel the wood.
Vanilla, oranges and honey can be smelled in the taste again. The taste is very sweet, but not naturally, but rather artificially. The sweetness does not come from ageing from the barrel, but it is clear that it is artificially added there (as if it were not in the taste itself, but next to it).
I would recommend it as a good rum for beginners and for ladies who want to taste real rum (not elixir), but prefer higher sweetness.
This rum has quite a contradictory rating.
My rating: 6.5 / 10
Or rum for beginners as well. Still very suitable for situations when there's not any big occasion going on, but you'd like to sip a good ron.
Taste is decently sweet, of course it'll be very sweet for old rum drinkers. Portion of honey, peaches and fresh flowers going on palette. Also the whole tone of the taste is winter-y oriented, something like a Christmas grog. For the skilled one's, this tastes exactly like Rumbullion!, but without the herb punch.
I'm not really into the pictures on the bottles, after all what's inside matters most. But if you're new in rum sipping or just want a good rum to drink at any time, this is the one.
An extremely pleasant taste neat , like caramelized oranges&Vanilia with a beauiful mellowness thats not boring.
I see all the negative comments, and think you just do you want every rum to taste the same, maybe this is not one for a party, but for when you sat alone watching TV with your slippers on and relaxing.
This is a sugar bomb. Sugar, maple syrup, caramel and other sweetners mixed together with some alcohol. It helps introduce you to the general sweet side of rums and how to enjoy a rum without mixing it but that's it. It drinks away very easy but after one bottle you know you need something more mature. Safe this one for the general public or those who reaaly need to mix it when your other cheap rums are gone.
After searching the Internet about rum this one came in listings as one of the sweetest. Not dissapointed..... but lacks further taste.
This rum is so sweet it almost doesn't taste like rum anymore. Only sweet notes come to expression and proper ageing is lacking.

Smells a lot like a vanilla and lemonade ice cream float.
"For all its sweet sugariness, its really very drying and bitter on the palate once it all settles down."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I must say I had a great time finishing this bottle with my two brothers in law, but when it comes to the taste, it's ok but not all that special...
