Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4)
Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.
The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.
The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

Good rum, i enjoyed it, but it also didn't blow me away
riecht ein wenig wie Bohnerwachs / riecht ein wenig wie Bohnerwachs
I only started off exploring and reviewing rums last year...the first I tried were two spiced rums, then various Plantations, then Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva and El Dorado 12 before I learned to enjoy dry rums. I've reviewed them all and some folks say I'd be better off drinking liqueurs and flavored vodkas instead if those were the rums I favored. However I'll tell you what--I'm still a RUM drinker because that's what I like. I enjoy some of the sweeter variety--though they're admittedly in a separate category from non-sugared rums, many are very pleasant to sip or mix. The Ron Zacapa 23 Solera is even sweeter than the others I mentioned but to me it's not quite a sugar bomb, the base flavor is interesting and a bit funky--it tastes similar to Appleton 12 in terms of hogo. I don't recommend sugary mixers such as Coke with this, but it's sippable neat and good with tonic or club soda, plus a lime quarter. The best thing to drink is whatever floats your boat personally and is enjoyable. Online reviews can sometimes be informative, but take 'em with a large grain of salt and don't let anyone tell you what you're supposed to like or what "quality" is. I rated this one a 6 because it is indeed a bit sweeter than I now care for and as such I feel it's overpriced--there are better rums at the $60 level--but this one will remain in my cabinet to occasionally sip and share.

I recently tasted the Foursquare 2010 Exceptional Cask and it was the best rum I have ever tasted, so it was a tough one to follow. I tasted this one a year ago and it wasn't my style, so hadn't tried it since. However, with my rum taste bud awakened I decided to give it another go. On the nose I get some dark fruits with a little banana and caramel. Not as potent as I expected. On the palate, the fruit came across, as did a dark, but tempered molasses sweetness. I also got a little oakiness along with slight bitterness at the back of the palate. Somewhat complex, but muted. The bitterness hangs on for a while also as it does provide ample mouthcoating. Not bad, but not in my wheelhouse.
This rum is truly great. It has a unique sweet taste that will make you identify it blindly. It truly has character. It is made out of sugar cane honey rather than molasses and you can definitely feel it. Well balanced, it never disappoints from start to finish. Personally I prefer rums to be a bit stronger and on the pure molasses side.
This was my first real bottle so it will always hold a special place. I love the taste, the smell, and the colour. Some say it is too sweet but I do not find that. I love the oaky, butteryness of the first sip, that slowly fades into a more recognizable rum flavor. The smoothness of this bottle is unmatched and will never burn going down. As I do drink this one a lot sometimes I will add a small lime wedge in with the ice (I know blasphemy) and it compliments it quite well and makes for a different experience. If you live in the US and can get it for the $45 price tag its a no brainer. Where I live generally I get for 60-75 but still worth every penny. My favourite so far.
Actually quite dry and oaky.
"Flavour builds if you leave the rum in your mouth for a little longer allowing it to coat the palate."
Wonderfully intricate with honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak and raisined fruit...

Decanted, the rum displays a surprising body in the glass for something so apparently light, and has slow and strong legs down the side of the glass.

It is very drinkable but I feel this rum is overrated. For the same price there are much more complex and straightforward rums than this.
