Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4)
Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.
The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.
The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

In der Nase süsslich-nussig mit Aromen von Honig, Schokolade und ewas Rauch. Im Rachen mit Note von Vanille, Toffee und Kakao.
I am a major fan of Cruzan Single Barrel Rum. I tried the Ron Zacapa 15 at a friend's house and I was amazed. The Cruzan has more molasses in the nose, but the Zacapa had a richer flavor. I couldn't find the Zacapa 15, so I picked up the 23 Solera. Same result - not as much molasses in the nose, but richer tasting. Now I'd like to be able to compare it with the Zacapa 15. My friend likes the 15 better than the 23.
Many probably got into exploring rum after testing this one. Dark gold color, sweet but not too much, both in the nose and throat, complex aromas emerge directly from the glass, well rounded in terms of alcohol hardness, medium body, vanilla-caramel-light oak-a sense of orange in the background combined with tiny notes of chocolate. Smooth finish. Always a good choice to ship straight with just a peel of orange.
One of my favourites. So smooth. Actually, maybe a little too smooth and too sweet, but I find it complements the XO quite well. I really do need to have both rums in my cabinet at any time.
Easy and smooth as well as sweet and in the end a littly bit wooden. Colourful but not that many different varieties of tastes. Easy going always drinkable starter.
Nez très alcoolisé assez désagréable.
Attaque en bouche franche. Finale longue mêlant bois et vanille. Hmmm !
Very smooth Rum, Sweet and perfect to zip. One of my favorite. Great one!
I've quite a good rum collection +/- 30 different rum and the Zacapa Solera is still one of my favorite.
This is good choice but not for the price, I think there are better rums in this price category. But of course it is smooth as 23 y.o. rum should be and overall I have nothing serious against it. But I would choose a different one in a bar, if I had the choice.
Actually quite dry and oaky.
"Flavour builds if you leave the rum in your mouth for a little longer allowing it to coat the palate."
Wonderfully intricate with honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak and raisined fruit...

Decanted, the rum displays a surprising body in the glass for something so apparently light, and has slow and strong legs down the side of the glass.
