Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4)

Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.

The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.

The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

There’s not a lot going on here, but still a good rum overall.

Lies, lies and lies... In fact Zacapa is nice, rich, full of flavours, but where are they come from? If you like flavoured spirits, this is drink for you and you can still call it rum.

Was a bit irked to learn that the 23 just meant a portion of the rum has 23 yo rum in it. It's a blend with minimum 6 yo.

Despite that, it's very good. Great for sipping. At this price, not a mixing rum.

This is truly a very smooth and delicious blend with no burn what so ever. It's sweet and defiantly one of the better "new age" sugar cane honey style blends. Although I am still a fan of dictador 20yr over this.
To those saying that 23 solera is deception, it's not, the fact that is states solera is completely truthful. While your seeing the solera as a negative due to time it is actually a favoured style of aging and allows the rum to have the pure nature of the newer rum and complexity of the older rum mixed together. I think it is a superior style of aging when it comes to taste.

Strong burnt caramel smell and a smooth taste. Easy to drink and nice with one ice cube. I don’t know about the additives argument, I just liked the taste!

I liked this. I found it smooth and slightly, rather than very, sweet. It had a caramel nose, a nice dark, rich colour and taste and a kind of refined quality that's hard to describe but would go well with a really fine Havana cigar. It had a slight toffee quality. It went down very well, but given the hype about it, I was expecting a 9 or 10 and it was a 7 for me.

Overall, I would not buy it. For around the same price, I think the Plantation XO is superior, and until I can afford really expensive bottles, that would be my top, go-to, quality sipping rum.
