Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4)
Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.
The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.
The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

This has taken over my top slot, pushing Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva into second place. Nose is sweet with dates, molasses and brown sugar and Bourbon barrel in the background. Less syrupy and in your face than Diplomatico.
I have to say I was very eager to try this rum and it is generally very well rated. It’s good , but I was a bit disappointed.
This is rich and complex. Nutmeg and allspice around vanilla and dark molasses. There is also an earthy, oak filled taste to the nose which is pleasing. Maybe some hazelnut and pecans in the air as well.
The flavour is almost as good as the aroma with a little too much oak tannin flavour making this ever so slightly bitter. There is a good bit of complexity here and just the right amount of sweetness. I really like that the combinations of spices and nuts work so well with the molasses.
I do think it’s a bit bitter in the end. I’d recommend the Plantation XO 20th Anniversary all day long over this rum however it’s worthy of a space in a decent rum collection.
Not really as good as expected. Too little nuance and just average...
Rum Zaccapa 23 was the first long barreled rum i my tasting career. A smooth, spicy and sweet dark rum. Love the necless around the battle. Handmade.
Nice flavours, strong in the beginning. Nice and full body with the second sip
This rum is as much the base line to critic a lot of molasses rums as well as maybe the easiest entrance to the world of rums.
Zacapa used to be my favorite rum til I did a side by side taste test with Kirk and Sweeney 23. Zacapa is still good but does not equal K&S in nose, viscosity, or flavor. Lovely to find a new favorite!
I read a lot of reviews about it...close to order it. Now sitting in a sports bar and tried it...smells way to alcoholic and unspecial...after a while it gets a bit better...the taste bites a bit...almost a bit harsh...not complex at all.
I have a lot better rums in my portfolio...if somebody presents it to you as a gift...totally fine...but to spent almost EUR 50 for it...no way...
Actually quite dry and oaky.
"Flavour builds if you leave the rum in your mouth for a little longer allowing it to coat the palate."
Wonderfully intricate with honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak and raisined fruit...

"The interplay between the wood of the barrel and the liquor contents gives the alcohol its flavour, colour and character..."

Decanted, the rum displays a surprising body in the glass for something so apparently light, and has slow and strong legs down the side of the glass.

Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Dark sweet chocolatey. Good enough to drink straight.
