Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

This rum was great. I love to share new rims with friends, and this one I became greedy with. I wanted it all, so good.
This a wonderfully well balanced rum made for sipping. It would be the rum which I would serve to anyone wondering what a rum SHOULD taste like. $47 can is almost a bargain.
Smells and tastes what you want and expect from an XO rum. Depth. Punchiness. Decent balance of sweet and fire. Pretty good.
I'm no connoisseur, as most of my exposure to hard alcohols has been with the intent to get buzzed fast. I hear people talking about the various infused tastes in spirits, which I want to be able to discern. But most of what I experience is varying degrees of burn and aftertaste. That said, my affinity (& that of my wife's) for rum & Cokes got me experimenting with various rums. I was a bit surprised to find that my favourites differed depending on straight vs mixed. My favourite mixed is Havana 7 - the rum almost disappears in the Coke. But straight I don't find it smooth, when compared to Mount Gay XO or El Dorado 12. Between those latter two, for sipping, I think I prefer the El Dorado - but both were good. I tend to like sweet things, so it could very well be that the ED was sweeter than the MG.
I cannot imagine a rum my cabinet without this little gem in it.
From the amber colour to the smooth taste it hits all the marks. The longer you can leave it in the glass, the better it gets, releasing different hints of flavours as the 1 ice cube melts.
Another one that in my opinion is far to good to drink with anything other than Ice added. No mixers for this.
Enjoy, graham.
i dont like this Rum so much, because the sweetness smell too much from vanilla.
Great colour, brown rum, with a good aroma. This rum is good value, I would say. I would say this is an everyman, aged, rum; you keep it because most will find it a good sip. One of the few rums I can choose to drink on the rocks and can shot, but good with a mix. Versatile. Mildly sweet. Keep it for the ones you want coming back.
I would like to give this an 8 but for $40 a bottle there are other rums I enjoy more.
neat it was a little rough but adding only a few drops of water really improved the flavor and aroma. This is a very nice rum, not too sweet like many today.
Inte för söt, mycket smak och ganska skarp men på ett bra sätt. Smakar naturlig sötma.
'ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla, pastry and...'
"Mount Gay Extra Old rum review by The Ultimate Rum Guide"
It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I can remember purchasing this rum about 15 years ago as I began my rum collection, which is over 210 bottles now! It was my first endeavor into the enjoyment of a true sipping rum, and also the first rum from the island of Barbados. At roughly $50, I had contemplated taking the plunge and buying this nice rum since it was a lot of money to spend for a bottle of rum, especially at that time. Well, I decided to buy it and am glad I did as the XO represents a fine example of Bajan rum meant to be enjoyed neat.
Not sweet, not too dry with little burn going down.
