Angostura 1919 8-Year rum

Angostura 1919 8-Year

Trinidad and Tobago | Aged | 40% ABV

Angostura 1919 rum is produced in Trinidad by blending a combination of light and heavy molasses distilled rums. These rums spend at least 8 years aging in American oak bourbon barrels.

The name Angostura "1919" refers to the event in 1932 when Angostura's distillery was destroyed by fire. Miraculously, a handful of barrels filled with rum from 1919 survived and were purchased by J.B. Fernandes - the master blender of Fernandes Distillers.

Le rhum est bon et bien fait. C'est un bon nom pour commencer à boire du rhum en dehors des cocktails.

Nose: some butterscotch and vanilla right up front. Then a tiny bit of alcohol smell but nothing off-putting. Also some sweetness at the end which keeps lingering.
Taste: starts sweet and a bit watery. This is followed by some spices, molasses and vegetal notes. Not very complex.
Finish: taste is gone quickly after swallowing. A hefty burn follows, which stays for quite some time. Ends watery.
Final: I would recommend this more for mixing then I would for sipping. While it definitely is enjoyable neat, it doesn’t really have to offer a lot in terms of complexity or taste. This will most definitely suffice for all recipes that ask for a gold Puerto Rican rum, e.g. this makes a killer zombie.
Notes: added 3 drops of water. Also, I'm an inexpercienced taster so the details might be inaccurate, but it's still really enjoyable for my still-developing palate.

Cocos, cacao & vanilla flavor. Good rum but the alcohol and the flavors are a littlebit out of balance.

A friend bough this for me when visiting him in Austria, because he knew I was into rum. He paid 30+ euros for it, at a local minimarket. The smell invites you to taste it, only to fell the strong taste of alcohol, which takes away it's flavor. Definitely not a sipper for me. And surely will not buy again.

Smooth rum that goes great with a Rum & Coke mix or any of your favorite mix drinks. They've redone the bottle but kept the same great taste. Definitely worth a try...

smooth, mellifluous and a bit oaky. Probably the best rum I've tasted (I am not a great expert)

I don't mind it. Can drink it quite happily, but not my thing as it lacks a sweetness that I look for in rum.

Lekkere warme, volle geur. Mooie kleur, wel wat licht. Met drupjes water minder scherp op de tong maar blijft wat vlak. Lekker maar minder diep en vol dan gedacht, smaak is snel weg. Eigenlijk zou 6,5 een beter cijfer zijn.

Color: gold; Smell and taste: predominantly vanilla; Taste of alcohol a bit too present for me, but mostly at the beginning - rapidly replaced by a subtle taste of vanilla. This is not a liquor, but a real rum with a nice vanilla taste, and I like it. A little bit more expensive than the Mount Gay XO, while the latter is a bit to me, hence 7/10, rather than 8/10. Would like to taste the 1824.
