Tasted at Laka Lono on 9-15-24 thanks to Pinto and Naomi. Pours clear. This is an overproof and needs to be approached as such. Undiluted, it has an obnoxious isopropyl aroma. The first taste sensation is liquid fire. Then tangerines. Drops of water yields some hazelnut. More water- cheddar cheese. More water- anise and licorice. Has a final spruce finish. If you are willing to dilute to taste, this is not as horrid as you might think.

Amph VO Mauritius Pure Fresh Cane rum
Amph VO Mauritius Pure Fresh Cane review posted 3 days ago by LUKAŽIGA 🇸🇮 | 246 ratings

7,7:On the nose, this is typical agricole of Mauritius with the dominance of fresh vegetal notes as grass, olive, there is a pinch of a resin, nice flowery scent and smoky with brine.
Sugar cane is juicy and mineral with fruity notes of ripe banana, peaches or apricots, perhaps candied fruits, honey and pastries. There is wood and a pinch of spiciness. Very smooth and gentle.
7,7:On the palate, as agricole, is mineral, briny, sugar cane is fresh, flowery, covered with honeyed tropical fruits as ripe banana, peaches or apricots, all candied, as on the nose. We get spiciness from pepper, ginger, is dry and vegetal with grass, the wood is light, young.
7,5:The finish is quite long, light, buttery with a pinch of vanilla and fresh, dry, as the sugar cane is juicy and mineral with fruity touch and a bit woody, vegetal.

That Boutique-y Rum Company Caroni Distillery Batch 14 24-Year review posted 3 days ago by DL01 🇬🇧 | 42 ratings

Thoughts: So this is something different! It fully occupies your palate and decides not to sit there gracefully either. Unsurprisingly complex for an aged rum, this has hints of a Jamaican rum with the strong funky esters. Anise is pretty potent on this one along with the notes of charred port barrels all served in a lounge with leathers aged by cigar smokers. The very high percentage does give the taste buds a battering and would have been interesting to see this as a 40% to perhaps get some more of those flavours out. This retailed/retails for £330 and above, we think there are better rums out there for this price but it does deserve high praise.

Rating: 7/10

Smell - treacle, port barrels, dark chocolate, oily
Taste - high alcohol burn, smoked wood, esters, sweet dark fruit, anise
After Taste - smoking leather, more esters, black tea, subtle mint

Dictador 1979 2 Masters Chateau D'arche 37-Year review posted 3 days ago by LUKAŽIGA 🇸🇮 | 246 ratings

8,5:On the nose, the first impression we get is from ageing in bourbon barrels, as orange dark chocolate is tempting with notes of fruit compote. Ripe plums and orange peel add energy to nose which also gives some light ginger notes and rich flavor full vanilla. Vintage leather could be noticed when the rum is well aired. Sauternes finish nicely complementing bourbon ageing...
8,8:On the palate, the first attack is with French pancakes, leading to tangerine sweetness and some apple notes. There is an underlying earthy note that adds complexity, followed by a sweet grape overtone (Sauternes) that lifts the taste again. A splendid balance between sweetness and earth, between bourbon ageing and French finish 👌.
8,6:The finish is long, as notes of candied orange peel and pear slices, coupled with a hint of smoky charred wood are delicious and balanced.

Diplomatico 2002 rum
Diplomatico 2002 review posted 3 days ago by StiGGe 🇸🇪 | 22 ratings

This is my second bottle of the different Diplomatico Single Vintage.

I tried the 2007 and it was also amazing!

Scent of farin sugar, fudge, vanilla, burned sugar, burned caramel.

This bottle had taste of chocolate, cacao, farin sugar, fudge, vanilla, carnation, cinnamo

On the finish comes a strange tutti-frutti like taste. Perhaps some mix of yellow or orange fruit (maybe peach,) also along with a little spiciness.

A very complex bottle with many different flavours to find.

Amazing bottle with a very very unique taste!

The bottle was from 2004.

Scent of cacao and choclate.

Taste of sweet and bitter dark chocolate, cacao powder, wood, cinnamon, coffee light spices.

I would say its a quite dry rum.

60% Dry
10% Spices
30% Sweet

A good and tasty rum but it lacks a little bit of complexity and aftertaste for higher score.

I would rank it 7.5 out of 10.

Planteray Cut & Dry Coconut 3-Year rum
Planteray Cut & Dry Coconut 3-Year review posted 3 days ago by PTGarcia 🇺🇸 | 38 ratings

I really enjoy many things Maisson Ferrand makes and that continues with Planteray Cut & Dry Coconut rum.

It is a 40% (80 proof) rum that puts other coconut rums to shame. That being said, there are other flavors at play here too. In a neat sip I get caramel, coconut, something like coconut husk and dark chocolate in a long finish. It is a touch on the sweeter side, but nowhere near the 20% ABV flavored rums.

While it is delightful to sip on, I tried it in a daiquiri as well. For my taste it loses some of the great flavors with the standard ratios I use (2oz rum / 0.5 oz simple syrup / 0.75 oz fresh lime juice). I adjusted to (2oz rum / 0.5 oz rich Demerara syrup / 0.5 oz fresh lime juice with much better results.

I also made an old fashioned with it and was quite pleased.

Well worth the ~$34 I spent and the bottle is already half gone… :)

Enjoy!

Coeur Du Soleil La Reunion White review posted 4 days ago by LUKAŽIGA 🇸🇮 | 246 ratings

5,9:On the nose it is nicely filled with overripe tropical fruits as banana, maybe banana peel, a bit roasted, is an agricole, slightly mineral, spicy, a bit smoky and vegetal with an olive, brine and sea prawns.
Aeration brings out some metallic touch.
6:On the palate is sweet with overripe banana, perhaps banana peel, roasted, a bit bitter, dry and as an agricole, slightly mineral and smoky. We might think, that we drink a punch. We can feel a powdery touch of this rum. There's also some spiciness and vegetal notes with olive, some brine that is less intense as on the nose, later with a whiff of vanilla and tea.
5,9:The finish is medium length, as overripe banana stays a while, is dry, roasted and vegetal with olive and tea.
Simple, but ok.

Old Brigand Black Label Superior 5-Year rum
Old Brigand Black Label Superior 5-Year review posted 4 days ago by PTGarcia 🇺🇸 | 38 ratings

Excellent budget do it all rum by R.L. Seale. I like a lot of what Foursquare produces and was not disappointed with Old Brigand Black Label.

Purchased for the price of $19.50 at Total Wine & More (labeled as “Spirits Direct” per their standards), which I think is the only retailer in the US who carries it, I was eager to give it a try.

Tasted neat I get some spice and fruit notes with some molasses and oak and a pleasant warmth on the finish. Maybe some more tastes are needed to narrow down the flavors, but I find overall it suits my palette well. I actually preferred it neat rather than with a piece of ice as I liked the warmth in the finish and thought some flavors were not as discernible with the added water. My tasting buddy felt the opposite, and to each their own.

The flavors have a good overall balance and while it is not a particularly complex rum and the finish not overly long, it checks all the boxes for me and I would put it up against $30-$40 bottles any day of the week.

At this price I highly recommend. I have yet to try mixing it, but have no issues to try at such a reasonable price.

Doorly's 14-Year rum
Doorly's 14-Year review posted 4 days ago by ShadowDragon 🇺🇸 | 130 ratings

Not sure if it's the extra age or the slightly higher proof, but this bottle fixes the issue I had with Doorly's 12. For me, the Doorly's 12 still has some harshness on the finish that I don't enjoy. This on the other hand, I would be happy to sip. It's no Foursquare ECS release, which is why I'm only giving it an 8, but this is reasonably a very solid 8.5 rum, especially for the price. I will be skipping the Doorly's 12 from now on, and sticking with XO for mixing (incredible mixer) and the 14 for a fantastic value sipper.

Plantation 2019 Single Cask Barbados XO rum
Plantation 2019 Single Cask Barbados XO review posted 4 days ago by ShadowDragon 🇺🇸 | 130 ratings

Finally! A great Plantation single cask rum. Between a couple of rum tastings and buying a few of my own bottles, I've tried close to 10 Plantation single cask bottles and so far I've been severely underwhelmed by their single cask releases. The new Barbados Maury Cask one was particularly a letdown. Figured I would give it one more try when I ran across this while searching for some other bottles while traveling. This tastes incredible. Maybe not as complex as the recently released Sealander, but if I was to guess, I would say that this is precisely the style or distillery that they used for the Barbados component of the Sealander blend. Very unique flavor profile. Now I need to hunt down a second (and third) bottle of this as a backup.

Plantation 2012 Single Cask Jamaica Calvados 11-Year rum
Plantation 2012 Single Cask Jamaica Calvados 11-Year review posted 4 days ago by ShadowDragon 🇺🇸 | 130 ratings

Decent Jamaican rum, but the Calvados finish doesn't really add much in this bottle. I was actually surprised that this is aged for 11 years, because if I was to guess I would have said around 5. Too harsh on the finish to be sippable. It'll make for a fantastic mixer, but not really worth it for this price. Better than the Plantation Xaymaca, but not as good as the Orange Wine Cask finished Jamaican that they released previously.
