Santa Teresa 1796 rum is produced in Venezuela and aged using the solera system that blends rums aged between 4 and 35 years. Before bottling, the rum is aged for a further year in large French oak casks to marry the blends.
This rum was first created in 1996 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the distillery, the Santa Teresa Hacienda.

Everything that diplomatico isnt and wishes it was. Strong bold and not too sweet, with the change of the bottle recently the flavor profile of this rum also changed but for the better. It is now much smoother without being too sweet but still with a strong nose and finish that reminds you “yes, you are drinking rum...and it will put hairs on your chest”
Discovered 30 yrs ago and we didn’t really know what we had at the time but it did become one of the elite for the timeline in rum....love the whole package to this day and decent value
I would give it a 7,5, but I can't. I do not think it is in the same league of the El Dorado 15 or Zacapa Solera 23, but you have to pay the same amount (at least in the UK). I think it is a great rum and I appreciate how well balanced it is, but it does not have the same level of complexity of the two aforementioned rums (and costs the same). I put it in the same category of the Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva: great elegant rums amd they will make you always happy. But not quite at the same level of Zacapa 23 and El Dorado 15.
In my other reviews, I say I like sweetened rums more than the "natural". But I have to say this one maybe changed my mind...
Santa Teresa 1796 is a wonderful and quality rum. I didn't know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised by the natural sweetness and by the complexity of the rum. When drinking, I thought about Zacapa 23. Both of these rums are made using the solera system and I guess that's the reason behind the interesting complexity and layers of taste. Santa Teresa gets the upper hand here though, because it's not trying to impress so hard. I thought Zacapa 23 was really good, but when comparing to this.. the sweetness of Zacapa stands out a bit and is more.. obtrusive you could say. Don't get me wrong. Both of these rums are superb in my eyes, but they are different and it depends on what you're looking for.
All in all, this rum really surprised and exceeded my expectations. It's such an honest rum which just doesn't try too hard to impress someone, still masterfully crafted. Nice rum for evening sipping.
Sweet caramel nose, dried fruit and baking spice notes. Velvety mouth feel with a smooth finish. Great Venezuelan rum!
Rum morbido senza infame e senza lode. Per il prezzo pagato ha un rapporto prezzo qualità medio
Me encanta este ron, de los mejores rones que he probado. Color y aroma excelentes! Me parece que es un ron infra valorado, muy buen precio para la calidad del mismo.
If anyone is new to exploring rums, i would say this is a very safe option as one to begin with because it is not overly sweet and not overly dry. I find it to be bang in the middle and pretty enjoyable to drink too. Only reason it is not higher is because it doesn't stand out massively to me but perhaps the more i drink, the more i will like it.
Hints of chocolate on the nose followed by a chocolate taste. A nice rum for every day drinking
The Rum Barrel Review
"On the nose there’s a lovely dark profile. Fresh ground coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla, plums. There are some tropical fruits like pineapple and passion fruit, followed by a slight grassy note. Nutmeg, old leather, tobacco and white pepper. On the palate it goes down so easy. Milk chocolate, vanilla, honey, mango, toffee and cashews. Canned pineapple, blackcurrant, coconut cream and coca cola. The tobacco note is back along with some cinnamon. Not crazy sweet, fairly well balanced and easy going. Cocoa butter and orange marmalade. Towards the end is where you get a bit more oak spices and some alcohol heat. The finish is short with cocoa nibs, some oak tannins and maple syrup."
Has a nice light sweet vanilla note.
"Spicy notes and a oaky lavour are very pleasant and not overpowering."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
