Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4)
Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.
The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.
The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

For some reason this rum in incredibly popular. Sure I can understand it too. Complex indeed. Bit too sweet if you ask me.
The only "bad thing" about this rum is that you dont really want to mix it.
I was a bit dissapointed with this rum. Not as smooth as i thought. A good rum but not great. Tasteless
No tiene mal sabor, pero me dio acidez cada vez que lo tome. Difícilmente termine la botella. No lo compraría nuevamente.
This was my original review in 2017: Strong aroma, full body taste with strong caramels.
Today as of 2020: extremely sweet, but so sweet that it resembles an afterdinner. It reminded me the Diplomático reserva. Too much added sugar!
As a newbee into the world of rum, this one fits my taste just perfect!
I purchased this rum on a whim. I was away from home for New Years and wanted a nice rum for the trip. It has a nice bite to start and finishes quite smooth. Definitely has a strong caramel undertone. Usually needs 2 ice cubes to fully mellow.
Had a top bartender in Chicago make a rum old fashioned for me out of this...it was incredible. Smooth as glass and had zero bite. Dangerous for sure...
2 oz rum
.5 ounce demerara sugar simple syrup
3 dashes aromatic bitters
stirred vigorously in ice and drain liquid over an ice ball or soapstones. Garnish with orange peel and a delicious lexardo cherry
I find this everywhere now and the price highly variable, from 79AUD to 110AUD. I think the extent of production means this product is diminishing in quality. I have no idea how they ensure consistent solar taste for a series but this is not consistent. Some bottles are off the planet, others just OK for the price.
I do like this rum but there are better. The 23 year tag is very misleading though as only a small proportion of the blend in the bottle is actually that old under the solera method.
Still, it's very drinkable and would appeal to a wide variety of drinkers as its a on the sweet side with strong hints of vanilla and caramel to name a few. Rums like Pussers 15 year I drink neat but I prefer ones like the Zacapa 23 yr a little chilled, maybe with one ice cube.
Happily accept as a gift (as was the bottle I currently have) but would buy something else myself for the same money.
Actually quite dry and oaky.
"Flavour builds if you leave the rum in your mouth for a little longer allowing it to coat the palate."
Wonderfully intricate with honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak and raisined fruit...

Decanted, the rum displays a surprising body in the glass for something so apparently light, and has slow and strong legs down the side of the glass.

Ron Zacapa 23 Solera is probably well known rum, for me is in the same group as Diplomatico res. exc.
