Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4)
Ron Zacapa 23 Solera Rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala, where it is distilled in a copper-lined column still from fresh cane juice before solera aging.
The 500 year-old Spanish Sistema Solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23 in white oak casks. This results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.
The current Ron Zacapa 23 bottle features a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle.

One of my favorites. You won't go wrong with this exceptional aged rum. Maybe a little too sweet but amazing overall.
Doesn't really deserve some of the hate. It is kind of sweet but perfectly balanced in my opinion. A real treat to drink on a hot day or to warm you up during a cold winter night. It's not a XO but it doesn't pretend to be.
Not a big expert on rums yet but this tasted a bit rough. (Don't get me wrong, it's still pretty good rum)
Robe foncée. Belle complexité, on ne sent pas l'alcool en bouche. Très doux avec des aromes de cannelle.
Fra i rum di qualità che ho bevuto è uno dei migliori per serate molto alcoliche!
Nice sipping rum, good on the nose and a fair amount of complexity.
The rum to start with, but also the rum you'll never stop drinking. I see a few claims here that this a not a rum. Don't listen to them, I think that's a ridiculous thing to say! It's important to note that a lot of the reviews here are quite old, and Zacapa have reduced the sugar content from well over 40 grams per liter to about 20. Still quite sugary, but the rum sure has gained a lot of complexity since the change, while still being exceptionally smooth.
At the first sip I took of this I was blown away. After sipping about half the bottle I was a little let down.It got pretty boring. This is an excellent rum for beginners as it's easy to drink. It reminds me of diplomatico reserva but it's not quite as rich.Satisfied that I finally tried this I probably won't repurchase.Priced at $44.99 here at my local liquor store vs $29.99 for Diplomatico.I'll stick with the Diplomatico.
Edit: After trying this on the rocks I change my rating to an 7.5 it's definetly better on the rocks imo.
For those wanting to graduate from Rum & Coke and start drinking rum neat this is a great rum to start with, smooth, slightly sweet and approachable. Value wise it cannot be beaten compared to what a comparable whisk(e)y will set you back.
Actually quite dry and oaky.
"Flavour builds if you leave the rum in your mouth for a little longer allowing it to coat the palate."
Wonderfully intricate with honeyed butterscotch, spiced oak and raisined fruit...

"The interplay between the wood of the barrel and the liquor contents gives the alcohol its flavour, colour and character..."

Decanted, the rum displays a surprising body in the glass for something so apparently light, and has slow and strong legs down the side of the glass.
