Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

Pretty good value for a sipper at this price point, not overly sweet.
Best and most balanced rum I have tasted to date. Banana, tropical fruit, molasses, vanilla and woody notes come through. Sweet but not too sweet this is a lovely drink, straight with ice or mixed. Think it has been said before but agree, Barbados in a bottle.
A rhum for sipping and mixing, first taste will definitely burn, but after that you feel a caramel-chocolate feel on your back paper. A rhum for people who like a straight forward, dashboard clearing 43% rhum. Don't buy this as your first rhum. Buy it after a few times you sipped other ones. But a rhum worth having in your collection.
In Italian and English.
----------------------------------------------
It is an industrial rum, a blend of different rums aged from seven to fifteen years.
Discrete rum, with a good value for money, and is superior to many other even more expensive rums.
On the nose: sweet notes of vanilla, caramel, tobacco, with light hints of cloves. present also a known alcoholic average.
To the taste: sweet notes come to the mouth in the sense of smell, but balanced by a just bitter note that does not make it cloying.
Even the alcoholic note does not disturb, the finish is medium and the mouth remains dry.
Advice for everyone: when you smell a rum (or any distillate), before inserting the nose and inhaling, make a slight puff in the glass and immediately afterwards try to smell the perfumes. This operation serves to escape a little 'the power of alcohol that otherwise would lead to burn in the nose and cover many scents.
Try to drink it first by yourself, then after eating dark chocolate (70 to 85% max), and finally after eating a half slice of fresh orange (including peel) with brown sugar on top. ;-)
I believe Mount Gay Extra Old Rum is produced in a traditional style using copper pot stills. The rum is double distilled and aged in American white oak barrels which were used to age Kentucky bourbon. This is a well aged rum with the blend consisting of a range of rums from 7 years of age up to 15 years.
Classy presentation with a rich copper/bronze colour upon pouring is already beginning to demonstrate a rich nose with a dark molasses and toffee aroma.
There is much to like about this rum. The flavours of molasses, ripe banana, maybe apples and pears ? Has a nice seeet finish but is missing a little something . In this price class for a Demerara type rum I’d select the El Doroado 12 instead or maybe the Diplocatico Reserva Exclusiva.
Great. My content is too short so I am still writing to get to 50 characters.
I wouldn't place this past a 8 because of the finish, the taste profile isnt to complex, but otherwise great rum to have on hand, easily bought at a great value, i always have one in the bar
This one is definitely one of my favorites. I'm well aware that it is by far not the best rhum out there, but if I go to a restaurant and see they have this on the map, I know I'm in a good place. And I definitely know what I'm getting for dessert 😁
'ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla, pastry and...'
"Mount Gay Extra Old rum review by The Ultimate Rum Guide"
It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Fantastic aged rum. I did try it when I wasn't really in the mood so will definitely go back for more at a more appropriate time and upgrade my rating.
