Mount Gay Extra Old (often written "OX") is a blend of rums aged between 8 and 15 years in American bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay Distilleries is the oldest operating distillery in the Americas - producing rum in Barbados since 1703. It's original name was Mount Gilboa, and in 1801 renamed Mount Gay after the distillery's manager Sir John Gay Alleyne.

This is a good rum, certainly better than the average. After reading the posts I wanted to like it more than I did. Zacapa and Kirk and Sweeney are my benchmarks.
Being a bartender in the past, I have enjoyed my fair share of rum. This rum is my favourite Bajan rum. Easy drinking, neat, on ice or mixed. In the darkest side of Amber. It has great flavour with a dark caramel finish. Very easy to get used to pouring stiff Rum and Cokes.
Very good rum very smooth easy
to drink my first rum given a 9 rating
I always assumed Mt Gay rums should be mixed. Kinda like capt Morgan. Was I surprised by this one. Very nice blend. Not harsh. Not too sweet. A good overall rum neet. Over ice tends to bring out a bit of kerosene finish. Probably just me. I will keep this one on hand. Priced right too!
In my opinion it's an ok rum. Only ever had this and black barrel by Mount Gay. I prefer the flavours of the black barrel.
Took one from bonaire, was not dissapointed at all, smooth drinking. The only dissapointment was trying to buy one here in holland.. prices here suck π
On a par with the Appleton 12 year, maybe just edging it. Don't ruin it with mixer; good enough neat or with ice.
Strong nose and full flavours. Inexpensive for the quality.
Almost a scotch like feel to it. Delightful straight around room temperature.
I love this rum neat, at room temperature. Nose is sweet so I expected a sweet taste. It's more balanced than the nose let's on but still on the sweet side which I think is perfect. A touch of burn that lingers and falls off. Goes down smooth.
'ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla, pastry and...'
"Mount Gay Extra Old rum review by The Ultimate Rum Guide"
It is spicy especially on the finish and a little bit short.
"The nose is very fruity. Raisin, prunes and currants with a little banana and some tropical fruits a little pineapple perhaps."

This is great rum. Very subtlety sweet, with a smiley dark caramel and vanilla flavors. Neat it has a nice spice to it but not over powering. On the rocks it mellows nicely but maintains a strong, dark, smokey flavor. The scent is also smooth, mellow, and subtlety sweet caramel. It's a great rum overall and probably I would have rated this a 9 in the past. But recently I've had the Mount Gay black barrel which is cheaper than this and in my opinion, it's the better rum excluding the price. I've also rated the BB for those that are interested, bit won't reshash that review here. The XO is a fantastic rum and you can not go wrong with it. But for my tastes, I narrowly prefer the Mount Gay Black Barrel and since it's cheaper, the BB is now my go to.
