Mount Gay Eclipse rum is produced from molasses that is double distilled and aged up to 2 years in white Kentucky oak ex bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay is the oldest existing rum brand in the world, with it's oldest surviving deed being from 1703. The company developed the use of traditional double copper pot stills, a process that has been in continuous use by Mount Gay ever since its founding. The company's namesake Sir John Gay Alleyne was a good friend of John Sober who purchased the then Mount Gilboa distilleries in 1747.

Tasted this against other Barbados rums. The flavor is nice, subtle, but did not find it out of the ordinary. Would be excellent as a mixing rum and it is at a great price point. It could be used in limited ingredient cocktails, but it will have a milder taste.
Nothing great to write home about but perfectly drinkable - pay a little more and go for the Black Barrel
Note: I'm a sipper. My opinion is based on sipping characteristics.
I'll start off saying I had greater expectations and that lead me to feel more disappointed than I should probably have been. For some reason I thought it will be close to otherwise 4 times more expensive XO. Why, I don't really know. I guess, I just *wanted* it to be close. And, of course, it ain't. It's rough, all right. Without a dash of water, it simply burns your throat. And that's almost all you'd get. Unlike in other instances, where afterburn is actually pleasing, this one is not and is simply overwhelming. I could not taste or smell much else, as it was the heat that was all over my mouth and nostrils. Dash of water kind of soften things a bit, but still the experience was not much of a joy for me. There are way more complex options in this price range, check my 6 and 7's for few better ideas.
OCENA 51/100
Decent and reasonably priced rum. Good mixer for cocktails.
Mount Gay rums generally have a great flavour profile, but I found this one rather bland. Really quite rough to drink neat, but flavours are awoken once mixed with ice, a lime wedge and coke.
When I first started drinking "rum" aka sailor jerry and Captain Morgan I kept thinking that it was supposed to taste sweeter and have way less bite from what I saw in the pirate movies. What I found was that most of the rums out there are very reprehensible tasting. Especially the most recognizable ones. When I tasted the sugar cane rum from Haiti it made sense why the pirates said it was sweet. Barbancourt 8 year to be precise. It was fucking magical because I just thought rum actually tasted like shit. But it turds out that I was drinking the wrong shit out of the butthole of life.
There's many other cheaper lightly aged mixers better than this. I bought one bottle to try and it will be my last. A bit harsh and little flavor. Suitable as a base mixer but don't go seeking this rum.
For the same job get Appleton Signature ot Plantation 3 Star.

Quite sickly sweet smell.
"When sipped the rum does not exhibit much of these sickly sweet flavours. It’s just very heavy on the alcohol. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

A good basic rum with a lot of spice notes from the heavy char whiskey barrels that they use. Unfortunately, it doesn't play well with other ingredients, but one of the best lightly aged rums for a Barbados rum punch. Basically needs bitters to make it shine in cocktails. On it's own, it's fine, but I'll reach for other rums before this one for neat pours or basic cocktails.
