Mount Gay Eclipse rum is produced from molasses that is double distilled and aged up to 2 years in white Kentucky oak ex bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay is the oldest existing rum brand in the world, with it's oldest surviving deed being from 1703. The company developed the use of traditional double copper pot stills, a process that has been in continuous use by Mount Gay ever since its founding. The company's namesake Sir John Gay Alleyne was a good friend of John Sober who purchased the then Mount Gilboa distilleries in 1747.

Smell: Strong young alcohol notes, brown sugar, green bananas, green grass. The smell is not that repulsive - it just smells like a really young unsweetened at all rum without any complexity.
Taste: This is where it gets quite bad... There is no added sugar at all (this could probably help it) and it tastes as a cheap unaged rum - quite a burn - no complexity at all - just some strong alcohol notes (related to cheap, rushed vodka) and on top of that there is a bitter aftertaste... Bacardi Black or even Captain Morgan will feel premium in comparison even if they are cheaper.
Well it is truly a low/entry rum but I was not expecting this following the reviews here :) (that is why I bough it). Not sure if it could be a decent mixer as I sip rums - 95% of the time.
Great taste, really good smells. Colour warm dark yellow gold, for special occasions
Skor som mohol hodnotit 6 ale vzhladom ze je to moja oblubena znacka rumu tak som prihodil jeden bod naviac. Na to ze je najnizsia rada je velmi chutny.
Not as good as the Black Barrel but has similar elements. A bit of caramel, then the alcoholic fire, a hint of toffee, watery, then a bit of funk, and then the afterburn. Would be decent for mixed drinks.
I don’t usually have at home but it’s far superior to usual options at most bars.
This is a very delicious spiced rum. Although it is on the cheaper side and there could be more there, it is most enjoyable.
If you are flipping through Smugglers Cove you will see this in a list of rums that Martin Cate "happily tolerates" or better
.
Decent general purpose one with nothing much to distinguish it from other $20-$30 bottles. It's still a step above Morgan or Lambs, I think, though just enough of one that I'd only be tempted to buy it again if it came on sale. I'm still playing the field rather than settling into favourites.
Stingy taste. Alcoholic, no smoothness. Belongs to cheap garbage tier along with cheap Bacardi and Havana Club.

Quite sickly sweet smell.
"When sipped the rum does not exhibit much of these sickly sweet flavours. It’s just very heavy on the alcohol. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

This is a great rum for mixing at its price point. It’s blended and lightly aged, and tastes bright, with some sweetness, but still some what dry.
A pretty good choice for a lightly aged blended rum for mixing.
