Mount Gay Eclipse rum is produced from molasses that is double distilled and aged up to 2 years in white Kentucky oak ex bourbon barrels.
Mount Gay is the oldest existing rum brand in the world, with it's oldest surviving deed being from 1703. The company developed the use of traditional double copper pot stills, a process that has been in continuous use by Mount Gay ever since its founding. The company's namesake Sir John Gay Alleyne was a good friend of John Sober who purchased the then Mount Gilboa distilleries in 1747.

This rum is meant for mixing and not to be sipped. Good for a rum and cola.
This blend makes me want to try MGs more premium rums. It has a light golden color and a lower price. Itβs not bottom of the barrel swill.
On the nose itβs vanilla and spice, not a huge alcohol scent. Drinking, a burn, vanilla, faint oak, and some spice but I am at a loss. Burns on the way down with a lingering bitterness. Not a sipper, but a very good mixer. I mix with Coke, I am going to try it with ginger ale. Not a complex blend but is smooth overall when blended. Enjoy it.
I bought this to try out after the locam store didn't have my usual mixer rum and I was pleasantly surprised.
The alcohol taste is quite strong at the beginning but after that I find it actually quite enjoyable. The aroma is solid in terms of the tropical notes. It is a solid light aged rum decent for straight if you can take it, or blended in as cocktails.
Very nice rum. Slightly smokey, very smooth and an almost sweet smell. A keeper for the cabinet.
Limited rum options out here in the sticks, but saw Tesco will deliver this for Β£17.50. Wanted a couple of options to have ready for catching up around the campfire as the summer rolls on.
Smell is mild, faintly of glue. Brown sugar.
Taste is subtle. Much less fiery than I expected, considering it's only had 2 years in the barrel. Again brown sugar and glue, with the finish emphasis on the sugar, with a bit of the fiery burn.
Happily palatable, if a little bland. I'll be happy to pass round the fire, though for a few pounds more, Havana Club 7 is a more likely repeat purchase for those occasions.
Pretty much in the middle. I wanted to just try it and i did. I wont repeat it but i also didnt complain much.
For me, this is a really solid rum. Maybe not the most exclusive option, but very affordable and an excellent inclusion to a cocktail. Holds a special place in my heart as a rum I first encountered and drank on the beaches of Barbados.
Drinking this neat is underwhelming. The nose is more like whiskey than rum and it tastes a little thin, or lacking some of the robustness that the XO has.
It evolves into a pleasant sweetness with very little burn and a honey aftertaste. This would shine in cocktails where a light rum would normally be used.

Quite sickly sweet smell.
"When sipped the rum does not exhibit much of these sickly sweet flavours. Itβs just very heavy on the alcohol. ."

Everyone seems to rave about mount gay, it's found in all the bars, bit having tried it, I'd say it's not that great. Don't like the spice balance used, not a fan of the flavour, there are plenty of other rims I'd pick up before this.
