got this rum for my 49th birthday, it's a good rum, can easily drink it neat/cubed up or good with a splash of coke. the maple notes are strong and for my taste a bit overpowering but i'm sure it's exactly why it would appeal to others more. good stuff and happy to add it to my collection but won't purchase it myself again.
A blend of rums from the "Caribbean", Central and South America, where the oldest component is 24 years old, at a bottling strength of 43%. Pilar was Ernest Hemingway's yacht that he sailed through the Caribbean.
The rum was aged in a bourbon barrels.
Bottle: A military canteen
Color: Mahogany
Aroma: Sweet and quite a lot of it. There's vanilla, caramel, dark sugar, honey and a slight woodiness.
Taste: A little burning on the tongue at first. It's sweet, but not as sweet as the aroma. You can taste caramel, cinnamon, dark sugar, vanilla, liquorice and slightly oak wood.
Finish: Medium-long
Summary: A good laid-back rum, especially for lovers of sweeter bits. It's quite smooth and good for relaxed sipping. However, there were no special flavours. If I had to choose, I would probably reach for the Sherry version.
Overall rating: 8/10
Agree with all the other reviews about how syrupy sweet this is. I had it early in my rum journey and enjoyed the uniqueness, but on re-tasting after a few months the sweetness is overpowering. The sherry is there, but would be more interesting if it wasn't drowning in syrup.
Hey Ernest Hemingway liked it! As the song goes, "Love The One Your With." It's a respectable sipper - not remarkable. Prominent notes of coffee, chocolate and toast to my unrefined palate. Cheers! JW [My sweetness scale: moderately sweet].
For a blend itโs pretty good. Price is fair. Can definitely taste oak. Smooth. Subtle spice.
This is one of those rums that can be sipped or mixed. Itโs on the sweeter side and almost close to a spiced rum. I enjoy this rum. I gave my brother a bottle as a gift and it was gone faster than any other bottle of rum Iโve given him. He even called to ask me where he could get more.
Sweet a little spicy, yet with slightly bitter coffee notes.
"There is a fair amount of orange peel or marmalade like bitterness, especially on the finish and the aftertaste. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I really don't think it's like maple syrup, but more of a caramel backnote. I would definitely buy again.
