I drank the Limited Edition aged in Bourbon Barrels and I must say this is some good stuff. Nice dark brown color. The nose is carmel, vanilla, toffee and chocolate. It's a real easy sipper no bite or burn. I drank it neat out of a Glencairn glass. You will not be disappointed.
I'm fully prepared to like this rum a lot because it tastes delicious and looks great in the glass. But am I going to be shocked to learn that it's been Frankenstein'd with sugar, coloring, flavoring, additives and a ton of other stuff from the marketing department?
I really hope not.
I like how different this rum is. I like that I was surprised by the sweetness and butterscotch notes. It is not my favorite neat, but when used at a pool party for snobby guests in a fresh painkiller mix it was amazing. Even the ladies drank nothing but this mixed for the rest of the evening. Most of the ladies commented on how much butterscotch they tasted in that mix, and I was mixing strong. Overall, Pilar made me look like a champ at the pool party and that was not easy to do.
Event with the canteen design, do not improve the rum, it is dry
Tasty but very sweet. All the comments about maple syrup are spot on. Decently long finish.
I'll admit to knowing nothing about nothing (yet) but I have been enjoying this bottle slowly. I find the flavors complex and fascinating and drinking this inspires me to search out more sipping rums and learn what I've been missing.
its like drinking pure butterscotch or caramel. Very sweet, too sweet for me as a sipper unless I add ice.
Ok where to start. Having foolishly bought many bottles I thought I hadn't tried/rated but in reality had, I checked RR prior to buying this. Bought on price ($40) and the 24 thinking that meant age. Initially saddened as I poured over a block, looked thin and light. Surprisingly had a pretty good flavor profile, on the sweet side with vanilla, caramel and the typically sweet notes. 86 proof but hides it well. Looked to see what island it was from and boom-Florida-wtf? Papa is a nod to Hemingway and the label tells some story about his character and legacy, blah blah. With that as the marketing strategy this could easily have been a bottle of disappointment and bitterness, thus the enigma as it was pretty darn good over ice. The marquesas now has my attention, where to find it will be the next quest
Aye, "overboard" be a pirate pun. This rum be far better than most rate it. She smells sweet of spices and caramel and a bit of oak. This gal be sweet, but not TOO sweet, just as fine lady should be. The caramel flavor does not carry over into the taste as much, but there definitely be dark chocolate. Not as much as the Vizcaya VXOP 21, but enough to say, "arrgh, there be chocolate here." There be a hint of vanilla too - nice to have on board. There be more burn goin' down the hatch than some of the more sweeter rums, but only on the first pass. This be a truly special, sweet-but-not-too-sweet rum! Drink up, me hearties! Yo ho!!
Sweet a little spicy, yet with slightly bitter coffee notes.
"There is a fair amount of orange peel or marmalade like bitterness, especially on the finish and the aftertaste. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

One of the few, if even that, of the 'sweet' rums I purchase occasionaly. There is enough going on and it's smartly bottled at 43% Definitely helps to cut the sugar. Maybe the next bottle will tell me why I visit it from time to time.
I would say this fits the bill for someone who likes the 'commercial' sugary rums but wants to step it up a few notches. Or if your buying for a wide range of palates to enjoy, there is something in Pilar 24 for everyone.
