So I came across this rum at my favorite shop in the Atlanta Metro area. If I see a Habitation Velier bottling in the wild, I buy it no questions asked. If I see an independent bottling of Worthy Park juice in the wild I buy it. A Habitation Velier Worthy Park bottling is a no brainer even if it’s not a “traditional bottling variety”. Actually when I picked this up off the shelf I thought it was the Habitation Velier Worthy Park 502 (57%). Only when I was in the act of buying it did I realize that it was the 151 (75.5%) bottling.
Oddly though after some research, and thanks to u/CocktailWonk I discovered that it is the exact same distillate as the HV WP 502, just at its “off the still” strength and not diluted down to 57%.
You see I had heard great things about HV WP 502, and had been longing to try it. This being the exact same distillate at a higher strength is actually a bonus because it allows me to play around with it a bit at various strengths.
Just a brief background on this specific bottling. This is an unaged molasses based pot still rum distilled on Worthy Park’s famous Forsyth Pot Still, but it also boasts something else. This rum had the longest fermentation period of any of their rums, thereby creating the highest ester count of any of Worthy Parks distillates. Indeed it is called Forsyths Worthy Park 502 because it has an ester count of 502 gr/laa. As Yoda once taught Luke, “WPL this is not”. It’s their highest ester rum. However, unlike the regular HV WP 502, this is bottled at 75.5%.
The bottle here says on the back “Do not drink neat, only use in cocktails”. I am going to both heed that warning and simultaneously disregard it. As Jamie Hyneman might say, “I reject your reality; and substitute my own”. No I am not going to drink this neat at 75.5% for the same reason I don’t drink paint thinner: I am not here to deck-strip my esophagus. However, nor will I “only use in cocktails”. You see I believe there is a much more interesting and fun path here. I am going to drink this neat at various dilution level. First, I am going to dilute this to 57% ABV thereby in effect literally creating HV WP 502; and then enjoy that over an ice ball. Then I am going to dilute some of it to 63% and make a “Wray and Ting” which is the main reason I bought this bottling.
First, let’s try this at 57% (or the HV WP 502 bottling). On the nose right away I get very heavy, almost pervasive caramelized Banana…yep it’s from Worthy Park. Next I get Mineral Spirits / Pain Thinner. Then the nose explodes into Mango, green Papaya, fresh green Coconut meat and the brown part of a perfectly baked Cuban Flan. Finally, I detect Toffee Brittle, just a hint of Modelers Glue and Strawberry Jam.
Taking a sip at 57% this is quite hot, even diluted, but I get Caramelized Banana and then Banana Smarties, unripe Papaya, and hint of White Grapefruit that builds slowly the more I sip it. This is less complex than the notes on the nose might suggest but these notes on the palate are expressed rather intensely.
With further dilution I get rich Candied Apple, Werthers Caramels, Butter, and Gasoline (in the most most delightful way I can describe it?).
The finish starts with Strawberry syrup and then transitions to a long, lingering Chlorine note, before finishing with a stronger White Grapefruit sour note.
This rum is quite enjoyable over ice all on its own. While the palate isn’t as complex as the nose might suggest at first glance, it has a great mix of tropical fruit (Banana, green Papaya, Mango, green Coconut meat) and wild industrial notes (Modelers Glue and Gasoline).
It does however, drink quite hot at pretty much all levels of dilution. At 57% even it numbs your lips in a way I haven’t experienced on other rums. It’s a pretty fascinating experience to play around with.
Indeed the primary reason I got this bottling was to make killer Wray and Tings. So I diluted another portion down to 63% ABV. And how did that endeavor turn out…absolutely spectacular is how. Seriously, diluted down to 63% ABV this rum makes the best “Wray and Ting” I have ever had, and by a large margin. Look Wray and Nephew with Ting is the original, it’s good. With Rum Bar OP it’s great and a repeat purchase. With Rum Fire it is phenomenal, bias busting even. With Habitation Velier Forsyths Worthy Park 502 151 diluted to 63% it is life changing. It’s fireworks in your senses. You won’t look at the cocktail the same ever again. In fact I am buying a backup or 2 just to dilute it to 63% just to make Wray and Tings. It’s that good.
Worthy Park needs to bottle this distillate at 63%, get it out on the cocktail circuit, and make bank on it as an Overproof.
By the way if you are wondering how I am diluting this (and other rums) to precise levels check this out: https://www.omnicalculator.com/food/alcohol-dilution

This one is a knock out. And not only because of the ABV. The funk is immense!
Destilováno / Nalahvováno: 2017
Estery: 597,3 g/hlpa
Aroma: Velmi výrazné - slivovičnost, lehce travnatě nasládlé a mediciální, plasty a úplně v pozadí tropické ovoce (banán, mango)
Chuť: Petrolejová svíravost s ovocností, po pár sekundách doslova drtí ústa
Dozvuk: Až mi vyhrkly slzy - extrémní grády. Travnatá ovocnost přecházející do hořka a stále se objevuje ovoce s lehkou kořenitou štiplavostí. Velmi dlouhý.
Sladkost: 0/3
Ochutnán vzorek
Velmi výrazně anorganický, ale zároveň velmi ovocný profil. Na celou lahev to není, ale rozhodně doporučuji ochutnat.
To be honest a faint whiff on glue on the nose. I tried this neat and then watered down in a daiquiri. You can't drink this neat (there's even a warning on the label). Your mouth reaches temperatures of the sun. But wow, so much flavour. Its a super charged jamican bombshell with some definite vegetal notes. If that's your bag...and it should be...check this out as a great addition to a bunch of cocktails.
Love this bottle. Being a full 151 proof high ester marque from Worthy Park you know it’s gotta be good. It says to not drink neat on the back but I enjoy small little sips of this from time to time. Makes for an awesome addition to any drink with a small bar spoon pour
Pas encore dégusté ! Mais par obligation (du site) je lui accorde une bonne note. J'espère qu'il ne me décevra pas
The nose is very fruity.
"It’s got more savoury notes to it – salty and smoky with a hit of bitter molasses."

An extraordinary nose on the fresh cane and exotic fruits. On the palate, the alcohol is present but is not aggressive. It must still leave the time of aerate before drinking. A very long final, superb, on complex notes. This rum is a killer, the very long fermentation of 3 months gives this rum aromas of extreme complexity. Unidentified Drinking Object ;-)
