It’s a little disappointing that this rum is so anonymous in a magnificent bottle. It’s a ok rum, nothing more.
Geest rum with coke. It doesn't have crazy flavours of taste but still very good!
My first rum from Nicaragua and it is probably not going to be my last expression to try from Flor de Caña. Very reasonable priced, especially in the 1.0L bottle.
The nose is rather boozy; the alcohol is clearly present and I am expecting a little harshness. Furthermore I detect fudge, spices (nutmeg mostly), vanilla, figgs and orange peel. A bit of charred oak is detectable as well.
On the palate the alcohol remains very present despite just being 40% ABV but it is just tingling a little without becoming harsh. There is some acidity in there (gooseberries, rose hip) along with grassy notes I didn't pick up just sniffing the rum. It is a spicy and pleasantly fiery rum with a lot of freshness in it without being very fruity. At the same time it has darker notes as well; dried fruits, tobacco, leather. The finish is medium long and pleasant but not great. Not overly complex but there is enough to discover in this rum to look forward to a refill.
At its pricepoint a nice sipper. Not great but well made, well balanced and with a pleasant dryness makes it a nice everyday kinda rum.
After drinking the FdC-12 and more recently the FdC-5 I feel obliged to take the rating from a 7 to a 6 as I feel the FdC-5 is the nicer rum and I feel I need to make a difference in rating between the 5 and the 7
Since I do not especially appreciate Latin American rums (added sugar taste like syrup), I was hesitating getting a rum from Nicaragua. I went through their site, saw no added sugar or flavour, my guy at liquor store made a worth mentioned bargain and so Flor de Cana gran reserva 7year got in my rum shelf.
I honestly admit, it is one of the most not just decent, but tasteful rums I've had so far. Naturaly sweet and smooth taste. Caramel, vanilla and a bit of orange along with dry apricot on the nose. Mouth smooth butterscotch, dry fruits, balanced dry-sweet taste. Neat, on ice with a slice of lime or tangerine.
Overall..yup... Very good choice. Well done Nicaragua!!
You won't hear a complaint from me with this rum. However, I think there is just more out there at the price point.
It smells reasonably “boozy”. You still get notes of good oak ageing.
"The finish is overall quite bitter almost like dark chocolate."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
