Leave it in your glass for a while before sipping. If you dont want a sweat rum but with body then this is a good pick
Toffee with an apple pie flavor to it. My friends are whiskey (whisky), lovers and tried this sipping rum. They loved it as it was their induction in to the rum arena.
When you first open the bottle it smells like turpentine. Foul. However if you let it sit in the glass for a few minutes, the overwhelming alcohol burns off and you're left with a delicious sipping rum.
We always keep this on hand.
The rum comes in a nice bottle, is 18-years old, color is gold/amber and this promises a lot. Sadly the rum needs 5-10 min to loose an unpleasant alcoholic scent, then becomes a better and you discover various aromas (spices, toffee, caramel). But these tones I do miss in the taste.
All in all it is not what it should be for such a high price/expectation.
I've gone through more than a few cases of the 12 yr, finding it to be a great social rum. Tried the 18 on several occasions and still have a bottle in the (home) cabinet. Strangely enough, I've always found the 12 year to be slightly smoother than the 18, but to each his own.
Tja - det er en rom - men det er ikke Whau oplevelsen der kommer springende ud af flasken. Dufter fint men smagen er nok en "smagssag"
It's not a bad rum but I would put it more in the $30 price range than the $55-60. It has a sizable bite for 18 years of age. Strong caramel aftertaste, most other flavors and the entire nose is lost to the alcohol smell.
I would say, "age it for another few years" but I'm unwilling to spend the outrageous sum of $125 to try it with 25 years on it!
Bouche riche, sèche et corsée avec des notes de chocolat noir, de caramel, de noix grillées et d’épices. Un final long avec des saveurs de chêne, de vanille et de noix.
In my collection, the description follows later. I have to taste it again (but I know, that it is a great rum).
try this room. of you like amber rums this one will impress you. smooth from start to finish. excellent value. worth every penny
Toffee, Caramel, Dark Chocolate, hazlenuts and a little touch of tobacco give a sweet but not overly cloying nose.
"It’s not overly sweet and retains a dryness which is particularly good on the finish."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Initially it will seem dry, but partially attributed to the strong alcohol smell. After a few minutes in your glass this rum will marvelously provide a great balance between a strong rum and a sweet (molasses-oriented) type of rum.
