I love the bottle and the story about the brand name is great for marketing. I paid about $30 for the bottle, but for other rums in this price point, I found this to lack depth and complexity even at a $30 pp. The flavor was simple and it lacked sweetness. On a positive note, it worked well in a Mojito, and did not alter the flavor like a darker rum normally does. Wouldn’t buy this again.
I keep the 12, 18 and 23 yr bottles in the cabinet for comparison, but the 12 is a great summertime regular on the rocks. These beautifully simple, empty bottles are nice for patio oil lanterns as well!
Purchased a bottle of this from the Whisky exchange website after first sampling the 18 and 23 year old. Ended up opening this one for a sample and before you know it it's pretty much gone finished it off last night. Wonderful stuff and for £35 it's a bargain. Superb nose and wonderful flavours of smoke, oak and spice I believe this expression was aged in oak ex wine barrels
A marvellous 12 year old rum from the Dominican Republic, aged in American oak casks. A gorgeous bottle, and a rum to match its gorgeousness.Thick caramel and honey, with old oak and cigar box coming through clearly. Develops touches of candied orange peel and redcurrants later on.
The price is about right, but it's not as good as people are commenting. I've had better rums for the same price from other brands.
After reading all the reviews on this rum, I decided to try it. I was disappointed. The rum is thin, in that there's very little mouth feel to it. It presents an alcohol burn on the tongue that's not very pleasant, and the flavor is lacking. It could very well be that I just don't care for this style of rum. My favorite so far is Ron Cartavio XO which is very different. I do like a sweeter rum with more caramel and molasses hints. I'm sure this is a great rum for many people, it's just not my style.
This rum is pretty good. For me, there are some other rums I would rather drink around this price point, but this is still a very good rum. It has good flavor, and doesn't have too much of a bite. I am very interested in trying the varieties that are aged a bit longer one day, to see how those ones are in comparison. Also, I like the bottle. I think the shape of the bottle is pretty neat.
I like to purchase this as a gift for other people. It is a nice rum to expand people's views
It's like Diplomatic Reserva but double strength. It is easy to drink on ice, also neat but can be lost easily. Diplomatico gets lost in ice though, so I would definitely choose this first every time.
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

A surprisingly rich and velvet rum that balances age with youth. Priced incredibly cheap at $27 a bottle from Costco, I was amazed at the depth of flavor. It has a wonderful fruity note, creamy oakiness and vanilla that doesn't overpower, and a silky smooth finish when sipped neat. At some point, due to your love to the 12, you'll wonder if the 18 or 23 year is worth the money. I have sipped the 12 and the 23 side by side and without question prefer the youth of the 12 year. Too much is lost and not enough gained when the age creeps up. Without having tried the 18 year, I can't give a comparison to that, but I can say 23 years is too much for this rum. I am very impressed at the K&S 12.
