Matusalem Gran Reserva 15-Year rum
Matusalem Gran Reserva 15-Year review posted 2 months ago by The Sipping Pirate 🇳🇱 | 84 ratings

On the nose. Sweet smell of alcohol and the taste is alcohol and has a burning linger in your stomach. If you told me it was a 2y or 7y I would expect it, not from a 15y. Probably good for mixing but not a sipper.

Chairman’s Reserve Spiced review posted 2 months ago by The Sipping Pirate 🇳🇱 | 84 ratings

I usually don't buy spiced rum, however the reviews pulled me over and I was pleasantly surprised. On the nose I smell sweet orange. The taste is not that strong of alcohol and taste like a soft orange liqueur. burns a little when it goes down, but for a spiced rum? This is the best spiced rum I tasted so far.

I took it neat (as 1 should) but I think I will take it with Ice for hot days.

The beginning of fragrant cognac and candies, sweet, light spice, not alcoholic, the taste is dominated by bee glue, completes the pleasant finish of sweets and cognac.

Начало ароматного коньяка и конфет, сладкий, лёгкая пряность, не спиртуозный, во вкусе доминирует прополис ,завершает приятный финиш конфет с коньяком.

Rum starts with soft vanilla and a barrel, a little honey. It’s easy to drink, a little pepper and honey at the finish, classic light Dominican rum, without bright features, affordable price.

Ром встречает мягкой ванилью и бочкой , немного меда. Ром легко пить, на финише немного перца и меда, классическая легкая доминикана, без ярких особенностей ,доступная цена.

Alto Grande 5 Year Puerto Rican Rum 5-Year rum
Alto Grande 5 Year Puerto Rican Rum 5-Year review posted 2 months ago by Mujuru 🇺🇸 | 157 ratings

This is a fascinating rum that was given to me as a gift by a very close friend who is Puerto Rican. He says you can only buy it in Puerto Rico, and to date I have not seen it anywhere in the U.S. in person or online. When it comes to new rums, I am not about to turn down a gift from a close friend.

It seems to be made in the traditional Cuban style. It is made from molasses, distilled to a highish proof on a column still, and then aged in hand crafted oak barrels for 5 years onsite in the mountains of Puerto Rico. It is then diluted to 40% before bottling. It claims to be from a small master distiller who uses handcrafted oak barrels and not recharred ex-bourbon barrels.

Taking it in from the Glencairn (without dilution of any sort) I get Coca Cola, Haribo Cola Gummy Bears, Lime, Tirimisu, and a faint hint of banana. From the nose it literally smells like a Cuba Libre with the Coca Cola and Lime notes prominent. Yet underneath there lies a distinct Tirimisu scent with just the faintest hint of Banana.

Taking a sip…it tastes almost exactly how it smells. This is a Cuba Libre in a bottle. It leads with Coca Cola and Lime with that distinct rummy-ness. Just like taking a sip of a Cuba Libre with a strong pour of rum. Behind that very vivid presentation lies some Caramel Fudge and an oaky, tannic edge.

On the finish? Yep…Oak, Cola, Rum, and Lime. Simple, but powerful. Very much a statement. The creator of this rum seems to have loved Cuba Libres so much that he set out to create a rum that is basically a Cuba Libre in a bottle. To quote Cristina Aguilera, a “Message in a bottle” if you will. (Wait, is Cristina Aguilera, Puerto Rican? (/checks notes…nope she is Ecuadorian)

So this makes me naturally wonder. If I made a Cuba Libre with this “Cuba Libre in a bottle”, would Cuba be free? Or would it be a double negative and result in Cuba being free from being free? Deep thoughts, these.

I may have regressed.

Back to the rum. This is tasty enough to sip on, especially if you like the Cola, Rum, and Lime combination - which I do. It is a straight forward Cuban style, light bodied rum that knows exactly what it is aiming for. While the back end is a little harsh sipping it straight, it’s not a bad sip by any means.

And it does indeed mix quite excellently. Almost too excellently in fact. If you are looking for a super complex sip, this might not be your dram. But if you find yourself in Puerto Rico looking for a versatile bottle to have some fun with, this one checks a lot of fun boxes.

Country of Origin: Puerto Rico

Distillery: Club Caribe Distillery

ABV: 40%

Nose: Cola, Cola Gummy Bears, Lime, Tirimisu, faint Banana

Palate: Cola, Lime, Rum, Caramel Fudge, Oak

Finish: Oak, Cola, hint of Lime, (a bit harsh on throat)

Short Description: Cuba Libre in a bottle

Another math-teachin' rum! Curse me for a lubber, but this rum DOES add up! On the nose, ya get oak and butterscotch... kinda sweet smellin', but not so much. There be raisins for sure, but then there be a hint of sherry, and a ghostly whiff of char hidin' way in the back. An auspicious start! On the tongue, like her 5+3 cousin, the first sip be clear and smooth, with a body to match. She not be as dry as the 5+3, but she not be sickly sweet either! First on board be the raisins and the sherry fightin' for supremacy. When the raisins fall, cocoa steps in. When the cocoa falls, burned sugar takes up the sword. In the end, sherry reigns supreme, but she floats there on yer tongue - the whole time - like the worst kind of flotsam as all the other flavors step up, show their mettle, and pass on to Davy Jones' Locker. As sippin' rums go, this one be better than most. Far better. There be zero burn at all with this one. Avast! If ya not be a proper pirate, and ya not be used to all that rum has to offer, but wish to imbibe on a more mature rum, give this rum a go. Burn and sink me if I be lyin', but ya will not be disappointed! Arrgh!

Nose: Intensity is apparent. That same artificial, stale peanut butter detected in other marks. Acetone. Light, fruity notes are again in the background. Bright. Surprisingly light on the alcohol. There is a spice note I can't identify here, but it is quite pleasant.

Taste: The artificial peanut butter and acetone are once again up front, but disappear rapidly, yielding to non-specific fruitier flavors. Pepper, lightly sweet, a hint of bitterness. This is followed by an earthy note and hint if saline. This has a very layered delivery, distinct. A medium-long finish, and molasses has the final say. This was a fun one! Liked it a lot.

8,2:On the nose, the first touch we get are overripe tropical fruits with caramelized fermented pineapple, overriden with baking spices, strong cinnamon and pastries. We cannot forget nails polish. After airing a bit, there is cookie dough and toasted wood with dried fruits, becomes roasted after a while and well balanced. We notice some flowery touch then and ginger. In the end it is more medicinal, metallic, with leather note and a bit dry.
8,5:On the palate, the first attack are ripe, velvety tropical fruits with confectionery, like fruit cake or brioche then intense peppery spiciness that quickly goes away and baking spices come instead. After it gets a bit metallic, bitter and dry. The fruits become dried, everything goes towards more balance, the wood toasted and there are some yellow fruits and biscuits.
8,6:The finish is long with dried fruits, tropical fruits, pastries, maple, some spiciness, baking spices, toasted wood, very round, a bit dry.
