Thanks so much for submitting a report. It has been emailed to the Rum Captain and will be actioned shortly.
Rough and unfinished. It’s needs a sweetness to tame its bite!
There’s a lot to like here, primarily the complexity of the flavor the follows a very pretty vanilla bouquet. What’s not there that I hoped for is more body (it’s actually quite thin) and a longer, smoother finish (it ends with a rather abruptl bit of burning). For the price, all that I hoped for should have been there.
This is my first Plantation Rum and my first Overproof.
Strong for sure but still amazingly smooth. Worth a try if you are looking to grab the beast by the tail and hang on.
Strong coffe flavour and vanilla
Probably good for dessert.
7,4:On the nose there is caramel, honey, vanilla, tropical fruits and subtle oak in the background.
8:On the palate, it is creamy and buttery with hints of vanilla, pineapple and yellow banana. As it reaches the mid-palate, notes of muscovado sugar, white pepper and cinnamon appear, dried fruits and drieness, astringency, wine like. In the background subtle oak and spices keep things dry against a persistent background of pineapples and ripe bananas.
7,8:The finish is brings us dried fruits, dryness, sweet wine notes and is medium with pleasant warmth of pepper and cinnamon.
This is a delicious rum. Super complex and full flavored.
Smell: Surprisingly caramel forward for an aged rum. A shot glass of this is like a little cup of molasses. Mild and pleasant smelling.
Taste: Wow. When it hits the front of your tongue you'll get a seemingly natural mild sweetness. I expected much heavier based on the smell. There's also a light bitterness that helps balance it. And a burn. Really, surprisingly hot for only lightly overproof.
I can't say much about the flavor, like vanilla or whatever. It tastes of molasses rum with a mild vinyl flavor and a strong burn that covers up any thing else. I don't mean this in a bad way.
It's a LOT like Bacardi Ocho (8-year) but hotter and with milder vinyl/chemical flavor and almost none of the unpleasant odor that comes with it. I tasted the two side by side just to confirm this.
I made a tiki cocktail (Red-nosed Zebra) that called for Bacardi 8. I found it to be a great substitute at the price. The similar-to-Bacardi chemical taste does punch through more than when sipped straight, but it works quite well.
Would I buy it again when in need of an aged rum for cocktails? Definitely if it specifically called for aged Bacardi or Puerto Rican rum (although I've yet to try Bacardi 4/10 or Don Q 7). Price-wise it does quite well with more character than Plantation 5-year and less unpleasantness than true Bacardi 8-year.
Would I drink this as an old fashion? I'll update when I do.
For now I say 8/10 only because of the price. If it was $30+ it would be a 7.
Red-Nosed Zebra (From Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar)
1-1/2 oz Bacardi 8 rum
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz agave nectar
1/2 oz strawberry purée
Garnish the top of the crushed ice with 3 cranberries and 2 mint sprigs configured to look like a holly leaf and berries.
Bottle looks great, color looks great.
On the nose it is sweet sugary with a hint of vanilla, however when u taste it it burns straight away, there is no real taste, it goes down a bit smooth but it has a strong after burner in your mouth.
It is good for a mixer, however it has potential to be a sipper but it needs a lot of work.
Faint nose, taste is burnt toffee with a kick of spice and peppery burn finish. Strong but controlled and not overpowering, heats the chest. Really solid sipper, would rate higher if it had a stronger nose. A rater said lost spirits (now closed :( and smith and cross, I’d say lost spirits with a splash of admiral rodney)
Nose is forestry a hint of grass but not agricoley at all. Flavorful vanilla and spoiled fruit on the taste in a good way (think hampden) with a slight bitter finish that hints at mushroom and wood notes
Rancid funk on the nose burns the eyes right away when approaching, a bit too sweet for my taste with a bitter burn on the finish lingering metallic taste after a few seconds as well, not enjoyable. Left it a few seconds to breathe and got a tiny bit better
Lovely taste, different kind of flavours that are strong but.not overwelming.

Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
