i'm giving this pour more credit than the community is suggesting. Maybe it's because i had the 50th anniversary poured first and fell in love with that. maybe cause i'm writing this under the influence of the Guyana component - which is also amazing and I am partial to demmerara! I feel this simply is better than what is being given credit for. 46% is smooth as anything i've tasted and finished with. tastes are blended well by country and those countries play very well together in my mouth. So good - Bravo.
Caramel, chestnut and ethanol touch in aroma; salt caramel, licorice, and barrel in body, lasting tail.
what an amazing story about black tot day and its 50th anniversary! the blend of these 3 world class distillaries gives you a pour that is simply not of this earth at a crazy affordable price - good luck finding now, deserves to have been twice the cost back in the day! super complex with forward notes being the best of each country in the form of only 5000 bottles offered into market. navy strength is beautifully in sync with the bottle contests. It amplifies the taste and allows for the most memorable of finishes. this bottle is #2 of my top 120!
I have no right way to explain it but on the nose it is a mix of Safari & Flugel if that makes sense? The alcohol comes through the sweet smells so I have a hard time identifying it.
However, it is a great rum. It has that rum sweetness of an angostura 1824 but it has a little burn. It taste smooths and the alcohol is not really present when you taste it. This is a nice sipper on a sunny day, if this is spiced rum for around 32 euro's it is worth the money if you want to have something different in your collection.
On the nose I smell burned caramel and honey, when I sip it, it is suprisingly smooth! Totally not what I expect for a 5y old, when it goes down it is smooth as well with a little spice kick at the end. This rum leans strongly on the honey taste but it gets balanced out by the aging process so it is not overly sweet.
After I tasted it, it justifies the price tag of around 30 euro's for a 5y aged rum.
Tonight’s Rum: English Harbour 10 Year. I’ve been fond of English Harbour Rum and have even been to Antigua where it’s made. Got a flat on the rental car, and with no spare almost missed the cruise ship! I bought this bottle online from BSW Liquor in Calgary and my wonderful friend Helen was kind enough to deliver it.
I’ve liked English Harbour Rum for decades, but with none of the product available here in BC for 20-plus years, I’m really looking forward to this one! So, let’s get to this tasting and review.
In my Rum Club Canada glass, the rum is a dark rum for a ten-year product: A rich, bronze, toffee transparent brown that I find more inviting than some of my older, less colour-rich rums. The nose in the glass hits like a pure, unbiased rum. It’s a simple toffee forward, white pepper, pineapple and alcohol. There’s no musty bouquet or overpowering acetone I’ve often detected in other tastings.
The first hit on the lips is delicate, almost non-boosey. My lips barely can tell it’s booze. That’s a good sign as far as I’m concerned. The first flavours are of honey and eucalyptus. The next sip focusing on taste, I get orange, more honey, a hint of pineapple, and caramel. In the mouth, it’s also delicate for a 40% spirit. In the throat, this rum is easy, with only the slightest heat; it's a great balance. The finish is also easy with only a slight pepper lingering behind, joined by pineapple, and a hint of leather and tobacco.
This is a wonderful rum and don’t think my review does it justice. I give it 10/10 on the Bob rum scale. Your results may vary. This is number of 411 of my 500 Rum goal, which now seems like a genuine possibility. Cheers, Ya’all.
Paradna jamajka so vsetkym co k tomu patri.
Farba tmava krasne jantarovo karamelova.
V arome citit sudovost, ovocie, vanilku a jemnu alkoholovost.
Chut vybalancovana "po jamajsku". Cize najprv otvarju hrejive chute alkoholom a esterov, nasledne sa prelina do sudovosti. Potom nastupuje jamajsky funk kedy chut ustupuje, zacne ukazovat tropicie ovocie, osobne identifikujem banany, vanilka a nejaky citrus. A na chvoste zas jemne hrejivo prichadza na kratko dymovost stareneho rumu.
Vsehovsudy ma tento rum velmi potesil, je lahky, da sa sipovat cely vecer a som rad ze som sa nan nechal nahovorit
Ripe fruits, grass, and sweetness in aroma. The palate reveals pleasant burning with earthy tones, leading to a fruity, warming tail.
Earthy barrel, cinnamon, and salted caramel in aroma. Quick sweet vanilla and caramel start, spicy body with raisins. Numbing heat with caramel and barrel in the tail.
Aromas of green apple, clove, and spicy bitterness. The palate offers caramel start, clove, and cognac barrel complexity. A rich, barrel-aged delight.
First thing, I have to point out, is uncanny resemblance with more popular El Dorado 12.
Sweet sugarcane/sherry aroma accompanied with sharp alcohol scent. Rich and elegant.
BTW, rum and cherry cask is good combination. Anytime!
Taste is in contrast. Little bit behind the scent. Low sweetness, sugarcane of course, oak barrel, with dry wooden end. Literally oak wood taste.
Presentation is nice, classic cardboard box with lot of trophies on the back and standard Doorly's bottle which I consider attractive and suitable for rum. ABV 43% is big plus.
One thing, which spoils overall good impression, is the stopper. It is made from some kind of rubbery plastic with wooden cap. I do not want any plastic sh*t to touch my food or drink.
Why they do not use the cork for god sakes? Natural material!
Anyway, I decided to give 8 despite the stopper, 7.5 would be my rating. Overall 7.1 is well earned.
I like sweet rums, this is not exactly my "cup of coffee", but I understand there are plenty aficionados, who like less sweetness in rum and I just can recommend this tasty piece.
+ complex
+ mouthfeel
- too sweet for me
I like the oily mouthfeel, the complex flavours, especially after adding some drops of water and giving it time in the glass. However, it stays too sweet for me.
Hint: Adding even just some drops of another rum (in m case CDI 9 yo Ten Cane) brought it to another level and tamed the sweetness. Might be worth a try for others, too, with one of their favorite rums.
Aroma is light, taste is mild and sweet. Quite good drink for such a low price.
My very first bottle, for sipping neat there are plenty of other choices.
It's quite dry. Ethanol is noticeable. Somewhat anarchic.
But in "Ti punch" (with sugar and lime), it takes his full dimension.
Sorry folks, this "rum" is not for me. It has a pungent, almost acrid smell and aftertaste. Probably not to be taken neat, maybe better with coke - I haven't tried, as I like my rums neat or with a little ice. I'll save this one for a guest who might like it.
8,5:The nose entices you with notes of wood, clove, allspice, and honeyed dried fruit like prunes, baked honey with apple and pears, brown sugar, licorice, vanilla, prunes and raspberries.
8,5:On the palate it is buttery, fruity with tropical fruits and spicy-pepper, with toasted wood, vanilla, tobacco, molasses, later going towards red fruits such as cherry, blackcurrant and sweet chilli, coming a bit dry.Irish whisky finish is felt nicely, has some medicinal notes and is well balanced and very complex.
8,3:Asian spices and other warm spices are present with a hint of oak, saltiness and smokiness at the finish.

Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
