Very difficult to source. After trying the 21yr I had to get the 30yr. Glad I didn't give up since it's hard to find. Update 9/15: Just found my second bottle at a local store today as I was looking over the selections! Feeling like I can enjoy my 1st knowing I have one waiting.
Really surprised how good this rum is for the money. Recently bought a second bottle. Excellent sipping Rum.
According to Bacardi this American "Havana Club" is made with an old Cuban distilling recipe. If that's so, they really ought to replace their standard production with the HC recipe, as it is much, much better than the typical Barcardi Inferior.
Tasted next to Don Q Cristal (neat) I was unable to choose a superior Puerto Rican white rum, as the Cristal is smoother but with less flavor and the HC is more flavorful but comes with an acetone bite. Tasted side-by-side in a daiquiri I greatly preferred Bacardi's HC, although it did come with a greater ethanol note, that's preferential for me personally.
Loved this rum. Packs a punch, no nonsense. Reminds me of good quality naval rum. Great on the finish and hits the spot.
One of the first spiced rums I tried. Vanilla dominant but in a way that adds depth, rather than being sickly or overpowering. Returned to it recently for the first time since, having explored many more higher rated and more expensive rums. I was worried my broadened horizons would mean the Don Q wasn’t as good as I remembered, but I needn’t have worried. Still one of my favourites!
nice rum with honey, smoke, orange, chocolate aroma and medium sweetness.
A pretty clear colour for such an old rum, the smell of Caribbean spice and I couldn't help getting some sour cherry. Having a sip will have to keep you patient for a bit the aroma kicks in late but it's woody and nutty and then suddenly there's licorice. Interesting flavour I'll have to try it in a mix.
I picked up a bottle in San Pedro Sula in Honduras, it's not very known but a good vinoteca will sell it. The good man said he liked it more than the Zacapa 23, I'm not sure here. It's a Solera run said to be up to 5 years old but it's extremely flavorful. You can roll it smoothly though your mouth and you'll find the taste of caramelised orange which will change into an exploding flavour of toffee and coffee.
The burn is typical for a younger rum but the experience is quite good and I should have tried it a bit colder as well.
I mixed it in a stormy and it makes a less spicy but smooth and tasty version.
Powerful bouquet as soon as you open the bottle. Quite enjoyable sipped very slowly and carefully neat at room temperature, with splendid, spicy bouquet and taste. Under 50 Canadian dollars per bottle.
Nothing to write home about, but desent sipper, goes great with coke and ice.
Thoughts: An interesting attempt for a Welsh rum but the tea flavours are more apparent and longer lasting than the spiciness which given its name should stand out more! The spices are complex in number and appear all at once so after the initial cardamom we had a hard job in identifying any more. Retailing for £40, even locally, this really is too much tea, too much indistinguishable spice and too much price for what it is.
Rating: 4/10
Smell - cardamom, vanilla, tea
Taste - dry, spicy, tea,
After Taste - medium, tea
7,4:On the nose, it is fresh and elegant, with almond and marzipan, vanilla and some caramel, there are tropical fruits and some medicinal/metallic notes, minimally smoky.
Aeration brings out dried fruits, little spiciness, roastedness with roasted nuts and the rum is now a bit iodized and coppery with gunpowder, a bit bitter, reminiscent of a younger whisky. It is quite pleasant and round.
7,4:On the palate, the attack is smooth, syrupy and subtle with liquorice, tropical fruits as pineapple, candied fruits, is spicy and roasted, metallic with some bitterness and dry.
7,5:The finish is smooth, round and dry with vanilla, honey, dried fruits and roasted coffee.
Bought it expecting a bargain 7 year rum, false vanilla taste hit by cheap alcohol taste. If you're buying cheap avoid!
Compared with Exclusiva Reserva, this has less body, not quite as sweet or smooth but nethertheless not bad at all. A perfectly pleasant sipping rum.
The first sipping rum I was given as a present. It is a tad sweet but very, very smooth and enjoyable.
Delicious rum…lacking the funk I expect from a Jamaican pot still but delicious nonetheless. Some fruit but mostly a dry rum that is non-offensive in any way (due to lack of funk). Drank this side by side with El Dorado 12 (~same $40) and this rum fell short by comparison.
Dry fruits, oak (more wood), dry cherry and prunes, super long aftertaste!
I've tried two different banana-based alcohols, and this tastes noticeably better. Glad this one has a higher rating, I feel some ratings make DMF rums out to be awful, but honestly, as a regular person, I advise giving it a go.
This was the first DMF rum I tried, and I have to say, it's delicious. I have all my rums with pepsi max, so no sweetness overload, I'm surprised it's only got a 4.2 rating.
Дата розлива: 04.01.2023г.
Номер бутылки: 6729. Batch № VI.
This is my first review so not heavy on the details. That said, this rum was quite delicious in a daiquiri. This is my second Demerara rum and I enjoy the style. I got notes of toffee and vanilla with a hint of oak. The drink on the left is the El Dorado 12, same mix on the right with Plantation Xaymaca…the nod goes to ED12.
Aroma - baked banana followed by nail polish remover, orange peel, and latex
Taste - caramelized banana followed by overripe mango, oak, and a long barrel spice finish
I don't know much about the nuance of rum tasting, including the terms and what to actually look for. However, this certainly is a good rum. The price is far better than I would expect, and it goes down very well. I've tried This and Imperial Onyx and while this rum is certainly not as good, it is better than anything else I've had for the same price.
Tasted on 9-6-24 from the Willard Folsom booze collection. Dark golden to amber color. Lovely aroma of caramel and Elmer’s glue. The barrel aged woodiness emerges with big oakiness. Delightful mouthfeel that’s both thick and tingly. A perfect amount of finishing heat. Nuttiness at the end. Hazelnut. I think this is underrated.

Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
