Pyrat XO Rum is produced from nine different Caribbean rums that are blended and then aged up to 15 years in used American sweet oak barrels.
The squat Pyrat XO rum bottle shape is inspired by the typical design of rum bottles kept by pirates and ship captains in the 19th century.

Nice taste and finish with spice, mixes well or drink alone
A very light, very smooth amber rum. Light hints of vanilla compliment the subtle sweetness. Again, maybe generous on the rating at a 7, but I'm definitely surprised by just how easy this is to sip. Would still recommend a light mix with cola, though not undrinkable on its own. Could even be a pleasant addition to cocktails in need of an amber rum.
Strong ethanol smell and taste with an after smell of synthetic orange and a dash of vanilla. This rum is undrinkable and sadly this will be an expensive rum for mixers and cooking
Tastes as if they soaked the orange pith in the cask with the rum. Would use this as a substitute for orange curacao in a margarita if I didn't have Bols around. As for a rum, uh no.
Love the name, it has a strong smell to it at the beginning and a bit of orange, you can taste the alcohol and it has a good burn on the tounge, an after taste like oak. It needs time to breath before it opens up a bit more.
Will try to let it breath in the glass a bit more, and update afterwards.
I love Pyrat for the following reasons:
Price, quality, taste and the fact it is relatively unknown outside serious rum drinkers.
The citrus zest on the nose and moderate to strong sweet smell makes it ideal for me as a summer sipping rum.
Really like this rum. Bit of afterburn, but very good overall.
The description above states that it is aged in sweet oak barrels. If memory serves, those oak barrels are used barrels that contained orange liqueur. The aging also happens before the blend (again, if I remember correctly). Therefore, some of what you are drinking is very young and some is 15 years old.
All of that being said, this is a fantastic rum. The aroma is light and inviting. The drink is dominated by citrus and vanilla. Compared to others, this is a lighter, less molassesey style. The finish is smooth and lasting.
"Had wine not been the drink of choice 2,000 or so years ago, Jesus would have probably turned every drop of water on earth into Pyrat Rum XO Reserve"

"it’s like an orange Chuck Norris came through the joint, belted out a roundhouse kick to the face..."

A very definite hit of oranges.
"The orange taste is very much at the forefront and the burn leaves behind a bitter tang of orange peel."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I drink this as my everyday sipping rum. A couple of nips in a crystal glass with a big spherical ice cube lasts an evening in front of the TV watching rugby or on the deck with a couple of mates and a cigar. It is an acquired taste with an overpowering initial orange taste, but the subtle caramel and vanilla rum flavour opens up as the ice cools and slightly dilutes the spirit.
