El Pasador de Oro Gran Reserva rum

El Pasador de Oro Gran Reserva

France | Aged | 40% ABV

The rum is a product of Les Bienheureux S.A.S. (in Paris France) and is a blend of several ‘grand reserva’ Guatemala rums with an initial long aging period of 10 to 18 years in several types of casks.  The casks are then imported into the Charente, in the cellars of the French company Les Bienheureux where the spirit is rested in used cognac barrels for a further 6 months.

Fruit and vanilla flavors. A bit of a solvent bite. Spicey finish.

Very well balanced. Smooth, taste of nuts some vanilla, a lot of oak barrel and cognaqs notes. It's a good variant to spend evening.

Nice nose with notes of caramel, fruitiness, hint of oak, and some burn. The flavor is nice with similar notes and additional vanilla and toffee notes. The finish is smooth and long lasting. This is one I could proudly display on my shelf and share with likeminded friends.

Very aromatic and easy to taste with just a large cube and a splash of water. Trully enjoyed the easy taste (not bitter or harsh) ... notice that i started with a comparison to abuelo 12 (in my opinion one of the best flavors).
I like the grand reserva it so much that i am ordering a bottle, in the name of science for further investigation.

It took me awhile to get around to buying this after hearing it's name mentioned a lot, and I'm glad I did. To me, it has a similar taste to Zafra 21 or Santa Teresa 1796, but is a bit sharper on the palate, I'm not sure if that's an alcohol bite or something else. I go back and forth between liking that sharpness a bit more or a bit less than the other two rums depending on my mood, but this is definitely a good addition to any bar. At $53 its about $10 less than the Zafra and $6 more than the Santa Teresa, and I consider those 3 to be my favorites so far for Spanish solera type rums.

This rum is way beyond the flavor profile of Bacardi, Kracken, or Sailor Jerry, although I have SJ and Kracken on my shelf. Nice tropical flavor, good balance, and not too ‘hot’. It is sweet, but not overly so. 8.5 is my score.

I had a bottle of plantation XO in my hand at the store and remembered reviews about El pasador gran reserve and figured I'd take the chance. I am really happy I did. It is just so smooth and balanced. For me it is just a tiny bit too sweet or I would have given it a 10. But without a doubt it is in my top 3. Of course there are plenty of rums I have not had the pleasure of trying yet but it is really hard to imagine finding any that are going to make me drop this in my rankings. If you can please give it a chance. For the price point this is worth it and I will probably not be buying plantation XO again as long as this stuff is in stock.
