Havana Club Añejo Especial is a blend of rums aged for up to five years produced from the fermented molasses of sugar cane harvested in Cuba. The molasses is combined with yeast and water, distilled using column stills, and aged in white oak barrels.
Havana Club was founded in 1878 by Jose Arechabala and later nationalized after the Cuban Revolution in 1959.

Imo very good value for money. Good for weekday sipping.
Perfect for cocktails, rum and coke, ginger ale, fruit juice, Lilt it goes with everything. At around £20 A bottle it's an ideal rum for any drinks cabinet and an ideal rum base for any cocktail !
Also received this as a gift and found it thoroughly enjoyable.
My first 'sipper', but probably far from a sipper by any connoisseur's standards. Quite smooth and relatively complex with your typical burnt sugar, vanilla, banana notes. It tastes like many medicore aged rums twice it's price, While others in the same price range resemble rubbing alcohol. I'd get this over the 7 year which isn't worth the increase in price.
Great rum for casual drinking. Good for drinks and cocktails and even drinkable as it is. It has a strong smell of alcohol which is bad but its not something what could ruin its taste. I doubt that for this price you can get another good rum like this
Always better then Bacardi. I can drink this without getting drunk, the taste is delightfull.
For mixing only. Men fin smag og karakter. Ikke min kop te.
i like this rum, am not gonna drink it anymore but but the memories... starting rum good for mixing, average smell, sharp taste
Not a big fan of the taste of this rum. Tried it with coke and found it to be just acceptable. Definately nothing “especial” about it.

Some oaky spicy notes.
"It’s very heavy with vanilla and the caramel and brown sugar notes are too much. The rum is quite smooth and not very rough."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Just bought it today for an introductory price in the shop chain where it seems to replace the Añejo Reserva. I usually drink rum neat, so I was a bit surprised when I took my first sip with this Añejo Espcial! I find it quite smooth, a little sweetness, but not too much, some vanilla and caramel, but otherwise not very complex. But pleasant enough to enjoy drinking it neat!
I also appreciate that obviously not much burnt sugar is added to make it look older than it actually is (as compared to e.g. Myers Dark Rum, which tastes awful like burnt sugar!).
A nice and uncomplicated easy drinkable rum - could be a little cheaper though (here in Switzerland).
