From a 5th generation family estate, it is naturally aged without artificial ingredients, distilled 100% with renewable energy and KOSHER certified. Great rum, the way rum was supposed to taste. Pure, unadulterated rum. Just rum, flavoured from the process, not additives. Don't get me wrong, those rums have their place, but this is one of the better pure distillate sipping rums I've had so far. I don't have access to foresquare or hampden here in Canada, so this is probably the best I can get.
I have been a fan of Flor de Cana since I first tried the 7 year. The 12 is the better bargain compared to the 18. However, the 18 is delicious. I tried it neat and room temperature. Excellent drinkability (if that is a word). Would be even better chilled and little diluent (not much at all) with 1 piece of ice. Loved the color, viscosity, and finish. So balanced and easy to drink.
Aged 18 yrs and it’s worth the wait. Silky smooth flavorful rum. Can sip for hours
This is easily found locally for under $50 USD. Easy to drink, but prefer neat. When adding ice or using in a rum old fashioned, the rum is easily watered down with the ice and difficult to taste.
...at least for the most common ones!
Spicy yet smooth. If you don’t want to jump to the more expensive and aged rums from this brand, this is it. Similar to the 12 años, but give it a while and the difference will pop out!
It is a good rum just not really my type as I prefer it with more molasse.
Tonight's Rum: (From December 15, 2013) Flor de Cana 18 Centenario Gold from Nicaragua. A rich color is the first thing you notice as you pour it from the bottle. Darker than most old Rums. On the nose, it's wrapped in citrus, most dominantly, orange. It is a bit sharp as well. On the palate, it's delicate at first with hints of banana and oranges but then turns sharp. It burns a bit more than one would expect from an 18-year-old Rum. The finish is a bit a peppery, it has caramel and slight burn on the throat. It's harsher than most older Rums of a similar age. It needs a bit more sweetness often seen with older Rums. #133 on the list of Rums I've tasted. 7 out of 10, I'm a little disappointed based on expectations.
Toffee, Caramel, Dark Chocolate, hazlenuts and a little touch of tobacco give a sweet but not overly cloying nose.
"It’s not overly sweet and retains a dryness which is particularly good on the finish."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

This rum identifies with the land it comes from. A strong brand grown through endurance and quality. It might taste a little strong at first, while getting more balanced by the end. Delicious and smooth aftertaste.
