Appleton Estate 21-Year

Jamaica | Aged

Distilled using small-batch copper pot stills uniquely designed for Appleton Estate, this rum is a blend of several rums aged 21 years in American oak barrels. Once blended, the rum is re-casked for two years to marry the flavors.

Was my favourite for quite a while.

Nice to sip, dryish and not sweet.

Biggest criticism is that once you start its hard to stop.

Super smooth. More subtle taste than the other less expensive Appletons. Worth the price.

This 43% alc. drink is very dry. All that I could taste for the first half a minute was its woody aroma: very strong, even overwhelming. Aftertaste is long and intense: oak, some fruits. This strong drink is obviously nice, the whole question is if it’s worth the price. Unfortunately everyone needs to answer that for themselves only after they pay it lol

This is one of the best rums in the world. Simply a masterpiece. A deliciously sweet rum (no sugar added), with flavours of vanilla and chocolate, together with some banana (especially in the aftertaste). A lot of oak in both nose and mouth, but never excessive since everything is perfectly balanced. The aftertaste is sweet and “funky”, slightly warm. The bottle is numbered and comes with a certificate of ageing. Highly recommended to every rum lover. Expensive, but definitely worth it

Au nez, on note un côté vanillé et l'écorce d'orange.
En bouche, on découvre une finesse de bois, muscade et cacao avec une longue persistance.

Had a pour at Cuba Libre in Orlando. Dark mahogany, great aroma and smooth finish. Worthy of a 9 rating.

The nose of this rum delivers a slightly maple/butterscotch scent. It hits the lips with a bold alcohol burn that continues to develop, but it never completely obliterates the more subtle rum flavors. As the flavor emerges, I get a peppery, maple/butterscotch. The alcohol and burnt sugar flavors linger nicely and are not an annoyance; rather, this rum demands attention without being so overwhelming that I did not want another sip. The finish is very long and fades to a maple/butterscotch flavor that lingers for several minutes. It can be sipped very slowly, and in fact, the flavors encourage a long slow encounter. There is enough of an alcohol burn to dissuade those wanting a sweet drink and encourage those who enjoy more robustness. I did desecrate a couple of ounces of the bottle, and it is amazing as a Mai Tai topper (that ounce of dark rum that gets drizzled across the top). I have less expensive rums for that task, but it was interesting to see that this rather robust rum did not steal the show or unbalance the flavors. While I enjoy this fine rum for its own beauty, I am also pleased that it is not a one trick pony.

Love me some Appleton Estate rum, and this on is my favorite that I've been able to try so far. Absolutely delicious jamacian rum! Still have my empty bottle.

2016 bottling

The rum itself is smooth, flavourful and complex. There are layers to this that need time to appreciate and opened bottle time. The standout flavour for me was the similarity with Australian topaque / tokay muscat without the excessive sweetness. Very well balanced and rounded to deliver a wonderful sipper. Easily enjoyed, respected and consumed - Highly recommended.

We all love to compare - Yes, it is nicer than the 12 but at over twice the price I will not be buying another. The 12 is simply the best bargain rum, at least where I live.

Tastes really good, with a lot of favourite Jamaican funk. No added sugar, perfectly balanced natural sweetness. Smells even better than tastes. And besides all that, this 21 Appleton has a beautiful and very unique box in quality. Great to drink and great as a present.
