This was the first rum i tasted and the reason i felt in love with rum ever since!!! It is not the best rum exist but it is best choice to start drinking rum!!!
This is one to have. Sweet smoky vanilla caramel goodness on the nose. Wow, spicy vanilla caramel heat your mouth and turns into nice fruits with very complement warmth in the chest. I like it cold, room temperature, with steel and ice cubes and coke on the side, always nice.
Little social in London made the best espresso martini with this rum and I’ve been trying to recreate it ever since. No luck but lots of fun.
Best bag for your buck. If your just learning about rum add this one to your Collection and you will not be disappointed.
Drank neat out of a glencairn. This is the next sweet additive laden rum on my list to try. The first was Zacapa 23, which I really enjoyed. I believe sweet rums have a place in my liquor cabinet alongside "real" rums. A good drink is a good drink.
Pours very dark, a deep reddish brown. Obvious caramel coloring. When you swirl the glass you can see the sugars form the legs. Smell is raisins, oranges, grapes, generally fruity with a bit of chocolate and bourbon rising up in the back. Texture is like light syrup and is almost chewy. The fruit carries through to the flavor to be mixed with vanilla, toffee and light oak. Very sweet with a bit of burn on the back end but nonetheless very smooth. Medium finish leaving nothing but the toffee and little bit of vanilla behind. I don't mind this and I will be able to drink the bottle I'm sure but the texture ventures into liqueur territory and for that I'll knock it down a point. It might benefit from an ice cube to thin it out but I'm worried that the delicate flavors maybe lost and I'll just be left with vanilla and sugar. Personally if reaching for a sweetened rum I would prefer the Zacapa 23.
One of the first “higher end” rums I discovered. It’s very smooth and has a sweeter taste
It.all started several years ago with this one
And it made me by rum again..
Now few years later, just the slightly too sweet. But still a pleasure to drink
"The palate evokes chocolate sauce and the sweet toffee, fudge and tropical fruit flavours from the nose"
"The nose is dominated by notes of caramel, toffee and crème. On the back end of the aromas, I can detect a hint of smoke and pineapple"

Smells sweet. It is fruity, oranges, grapes and raisins with scents of chocolate and a sweet almost syrupy.
"The tasting notes on the site are very accurate vanilla, fudge/toffee sauce are noticeable as are notes of vanilla and a finish which is slightly bitter like cocoa which leaves a hit of oakiness on the taste buds. The finish is pretty short. ."

Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I knew this was a good rum, but I didn't expect how good it is. I drank it in direct comparison to Zacapa 23 and Dictador 20 and it clearly won for me. The Diplomático has a full profile with notes of dried dates and vanilla, while being super smooth. In comparison, the Zacapa 23 has similarly nice vanilla notes, but feels watery. The Dictador 20 has a very full profile too, closer to a whiskey, but lacks the wow factor of the dried dates you will find in the Diplomático.
