Mount Gay Black Barrel is a small batch, handcrafted rum created by master distiller Allen Smith. It is a blend of both matured double pot distillates and aged column distillates which are finished in Bourbon oak barrels.

Whiskey, whiskey and more whiskey. This rum has some classical rum notes, like sweetness and fruits, but to me it is half whiskey. It's not bad per say, just not one generally is looking for.
If one needs a stepping stone from whiskey to rum, I'd recommend it. Otherwise I'd buy a bottle of whiskey or a different bottle of rum.
Smooth mouth feel with slightly harsh burn in the throat that continues into the finish. Heavy charred oak flavors with a nuance of carmel. Perfectly unsweet! Long peppery finish which ties in well with the other flavors. Overall it's not a complex flavor bomb, but the dryness and peppery finish pushes it to a 7 from me.
Taste: Mostly smooth. Toasted wood. Light sweetness.
Mount Gay Black Barrel has a lot going for it. I was not impressed with the MG Eclipse but at twice the price where I live, MG BB is a massive upgrade. For starters, light, funky fruit, rotting banana and a lot of bourbon barrel rye spice. Dry, pleasant, no burn, refined. This is nice Barbados rum. My rating is definitely over seven but I just cannot round it up to the rums in my eight ratings.
This rum is smooth, flavorful, balanced, affordable and unique. I can sip this all day neat, no problem. It also works great in any rum cocktail that you don’t need or want a Jamaican rum. I see a lot of people here comparing this to whiskey and saying that it taste like whiskey and not rum. Personally I don’t find that true whatsoever. This is rum that taste like a smooth and flavorful rum that is sure to bring a smile to your palate and wallet.
I didnt see that it was whiskey and bourbon style of rum. I dont drink whiskey so this was not that great.
Tasted 5/8/22 at Laka Lono, side by side with the Mount Gay Silver.
This is a very acceptable rum. It is "so. earthy." with "kinda a bite on the end" which keeps it from being rated a 6.
Edit: tasted at Secret Park, Omaha November 3, 2023
Appearance: gold
Aroma: vanilla and butterscotch
Taste: smokey, caramel, delicious.
This would make a killer daiquiri ❤️
Rating being upgraded to 7
I tried their XO and was completely done with MG. After going through my local one door stores stock and reading reviews on this I said OK, one more try at half the price seemed worthy. WOW! If your drinking XO give this one a try. It blows the XO away IMO.
Clean sipping, not much smoke
Vanilla, caramel
Not very hot
A nice balanced Bajan nose with a little extra spicy kick to it.
"Sipped the Black Barrel certainly gives some of the oaky notes of a bourbon but also makes the mouth water."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

It's somewhat on the sweeter side and it does burn a bit more, but I don't mind either.
