This classic led to the following notes:
VERY overproof
*a smiley face
Five stars out of five on the overproof scale
(although my notes clearly indicate its ranking is a 7/10 on the normal scale)
met a Jamaican couple who introduced me to this gem, now it is in my normal drink rotation.
It’s like a crazy person. If you understand it you can handle it.
You smell something weird, then you dive in and it’s actually a complex flavor. I sip it without issue.. 63% or whatever.
It’s all about the esters. It isn’t something off. Something a lot of people seem to be missing.
I found some Ting at a nearby Jamaican store. But the carbonation was doneski. Fortunately I had my trusty soda charger.
Not nice, too strong, does not taste like rum, more like vinegar…
It'd result in cellular damage to the stomach, palate and central nervous system (as well as one's general sanity) to drink this neat. I experimented with mixers but there's far too little room in a rocks glass...one shot of W&N is too much to combine with a glassful of ice + tonic, O.J., lime, pineapple or Coke, I'd need a vaster glass with much more mixer to hopefully tone down the taste--the base flavor, simply stated, is gross and impossible to dilute adequately...even a trace would be too much. I tried to be fair, expand my horizons and develop a taste for it, but it's beyond me how others can praise this--I enjoy many rums and some hogo is appreciated, but I haven't yet come around to appreciating highly-alcoholic decomposed fruit with overwhelming eau de roadkill. It's the first bottle of purportedly decent booze I've poured down the sink...just don't make my mistake of flushing it down the drain with hot water, or your whole kitchen will smell like a dead animal for some time to come. Call me an unsophisticated wimp, say that if I dislike it I should instead be drinking vodka or liqueurs, but to me Wray & Nephew is in a ghastly class of its own...it doesn't resemble the spirit I otherwise know as "rum" in any way (although I can't disagree with another reviewer who states that it's "truly bold, singular stuff"). The taste and nose are vile. In summary, I suppose you might say I didn't much care for it...I didn't mean to mince words.
Overproof rum that has quite the kick. Good as a shot and affordable
Get notable citrus and vegetal/grassy aromas.
"Despite the funk and grassy aromas there is still a fair amount of sweetness on the nose. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I wouldn’t consider this a sipper, although it certainly can be if you’re truly into moonshine and other high proof liquors. I find this rum to be crucial when making falernums and other rum cocktail spiced and flavored syrups. It’s loaded with hints of banana and other Caribbean fruits but it certainly isn’t as smooth as what you would think a 4 year aged rum would be, even considering it’s a higher proof. It’s a must if you’re serious about rum cocktails.
