Captain Morgan Private Stock is a pretty good rum. It have notes of candy and vanilla. This rum is very sweet, almost like a vanilla ice cream. In my opinion I'd say it's a pretty ok sipping rum over the rocks or in a rum and coke if you like malty drinks or sweet drinks.

I don't think I'm ashamed to admit that this was my first sipping rum, it just is what it is.

Here's my breakdown:

Presentation: The bottle isn't tall and cylindrical, so that's a plus. The fake cork leaves something to be desired. For it's age, I don't trust the color. I'm sure there's a bunch of caramel added back in.

Nose: Overwhelmingly super-sweet vanilla. Not an unpleasant artificial vanilla, but it definitely overpowers everything else. There are some other notes to detect, like warm brown sugar, maybe baking spices, some oak, but good luck finding them behind the vanilla.

Taste: Extremely comparable to the nose. The sugar and vanilla hide anything that could be construed as offensive, but they also take any complexity right with them.

Value: It's cheap, and should be.

Conclusion: Now that I've tried better, this is going to be retired as a mixer.

This was one of the first rums I have tried neat at home. This is the rum that started my rum journey. I only drink rum neat, no ice no cocktails. This is great stuff. Vanilla, caramel, tropical fruits and loads of coconut. I always have one in my cabinet.

A good little mixer for our sprite (Spicy Sprite). Vanilla, nutmeg with a slight burn going down. A definite go-to in our casa.

I was unable to get to my usual specialty store to pick up some Doorly's XO--my preferred general-purpose rum--and my supermarket only has a tiny rum selection (they don't even stock Plantation). I bought this not realizing it was spiced, as it doesn't clearly say that on the label. There's nothing wrong with a vanilla Coke--I'm old enough that I used to order flavored Cokes at drive-In burger joints in my teen years--but that's all this stuff is good for IMO, mixing with Coke. The vanilla and sweetness are pretty overpowering. It's smooth and sippable by itself but this is not really rum, it's a liqueur.

Price and taste make this a favorite. Smooth and sweet, it goes down easy and is just plain enjoyable. Great by itself.

The first glass was great, sweet, spicy and a hint of vanilla.

A fantastic buy, sipping is ok but I prefere a mixer with this.

Great value.

If you like vanilla extract, you might like this rum. It’s simple and slightly smoother than regular captain, but it doesn’t take much to achieve that

So had my reservations but other than having an artificial sweet taste it’s sippable, likely a high-end rum and coke no doubt but 9north still dominates as the best spiced rum I’ve tasted so far. Feels like a sweeter artificial diplomatico with a cocacola undertone.

Great as a mixer, surprisingly nice sipper, caramely with various spices.
