Okay this rum is spiced and sugared and the opinions differ about that. But if you are open for experiments (like my rate for the Dos Maderas 5+5) you can enjoy this Private Stock.
He did really well and you can drink it neat. And that is very rare for a spiced rum.
Sweet, but not to sweet, a lot of vanilla, some nuts and a little almond and cinnamon. Well balanced. Really great taste in a really nice bottle. For me a good 8.
Update on 04/13/23 :
minus 1 point for less alcohol than labeled, so only 7 now
While this isn't something that I am going to keep on hand in my bar, I will choose it over the other rums from Captain Morgan. But the last time I had this mixed with coke, I could actually taste the alcohol as an after taste and it was a total turn off for me. While there are better rums out there, if you want something readily available at almost any liquor store or grocery store, go with this.
I'm more of a snobby neat sipper, but this is very nice to sip on when you want something sweet with that vanilla flavor so many mass produced mixer rums are made with.
Should mix really well with any kind of cola.
Better than the standard Captain Morgan, but it appears to be a sipper, and it is not my favorite for that use. It may be a good mixer, but at that rate, might as well save some money and mix something else.
Great rum to sip on or add to coke. Smooth enough to taste the flavors and not get the harsh aftertaste.
A good starter sipping rum with lots of sweetness and intense vanilla, brown sugar, caramel, butterscotch and the slightest note of oak. For the price difference, I'd move to El Dorado 12 years or Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva 15 YO for sipping, but nothing wrong with it.
I’ve never (since got into rum) touched Captain Morgan….until now. CM Private Stock is one of my new favorites. Unfortunately it’s not available in Sweden but thankful to have family in the United States where you can get a bottle for $20
Captain Morgan is one of those products (like Jager or Fireball) that you drink when you first start drinking alcohol. It's at best, a pretty poor representation of what rum can offer you but even the Captain has a trick or two up his sleeve. This is his "Magnum Opus." It's not great but it's better than the original. The spice is kicked down a whole notch (still, a lot of bite, but far less) and it's ridiculously smooth compared to its cheaper brother (which isn't saying much.) I wouldn't recommend it to most but for anyone who still enjoys a "teenage" rum, this is a small stepping stone for getting into better rums. It may sound dumb but this also may start your journey to rum greatness!
Captain Morgan was actually a 17th century Welsh pirate...
