The best bargain bottle is the one that's generally already competitively priced and that you personally rate WAY higher than most other people. For me, that's El Dorado 3. I've had rum three times more expensive that I didn't like as much as this one, and I like the longer-aged El Dorados considerably less....

I also have run into the same situation. Still, the competition is worthy and some out there are worthy! I have taken a liking to Thomas Tew. Those guys are doing a fantastic job and will become noteworthy to say the least. Check my review for them. On the other hand South Hollow, Cape Cod, was terrible and a complete rip off. Out of the expensive rums costing $60 US or more, only 7 rated as excellent buys and 25 rated as good buys. The first group went all the way up to $83 US and the second group went all the way up to $150 US. So many of the pricey rums wound up just being good buys instead of excellent buys.
