There are several factors responsible, basically the yeast for fermentation gives the flavor. The raw material (gray, black, red sugar cane, etc.), the duration of fermentation, dunder or muckhole addition, the temperature, the distillation apparatus (pot or colum) also plays an important role. Finally, the barrel comes into play and here, too, the duration, storage location, type of barrel, new o...

I think the point is that we want clarity of information. If a rum states "two drops of 23 year old rum added to 2 year old rum, aged in steel tanks" that is fine. If the same rum states "23 year old rum" that is useless at best, intentionally misleading at not so best. And knowing mankind in general, especially the profit-making sort, I tend to judge for the second option: Intentionally misleadi...

Heading to Punta Cana soon. Have been there numerous times, but have always bought at the All Inclusives or Airport. Would appreciate hearing what stores have the best selection in PC; as well as "must buys" in the $50-$80 range. Many thanks for any info. ...

When I first saw your posting, I thought that you have GOT to be kidding. Malibu coconut rum is already dirt cheap. It also has 100 gpl of added sugar. However, there are three brands that are cheaper for their coconut rum. Based upon 750 ml botttles, Total Wine carries Sunset Reef Coconut Liqueur for $3.50 cheaper per bottle. Since it is from Holland, they wisely label it as a liqueur, unlike wha...

I ordered this rum after seeing some ads for it in Los Angeles. I was looking for a nice fruity, light and smooth rum to drink for the tail end of summer and early fall. This rum hits all those on the dot. I learned that it was made with fresh pineapple and dried lime peels. The flavor comes through very well and makes for an extremely smooth finish - which is my favorite part. I would rate this a...

As many of my followers already know, I am not one to write very simple reviews from a smart phone, which I refuse to even own (long story there). I am always quite descriptive while admitting to being awful with tasting notes. Then, I update my reviews as needed. This REALLY comes in handy, since I use my own reviews as my personal notes for each rum that I have tried. My spreadsheet is a good st...

Was able to pick up the 4yr today. Interesting to note they have gone away from Single Cask. So, I assume they're blending at this point. Will be interesting to see how different it is from my Queen's Share single cask. Proof has been standardized too and slightly higher than my single cask, but those varied quite a bit from bottling to bottling from what I have seen. Excited to try this o...

The best bargain bottle is the one that's generally already competitively priced and that you personally rate WAY higher than most other people. For me, that's El Dorado 3. I've had rum three times more expensive that I didn't like as much as this one, and I like the longer-aged El Dorados considerably less....

I was never a fan of rye whiskey, but a few companies have aged ordinary mixer rum in casks that formerly held rye whiskey. The results are like a magic wand was waved over the rum. These include Myer's Single Barrel, Papa's Pilar Legacy Edition 2021, and Bayou Single Barrel Select. Grander also produces one, but I have yet to try it. Are there any chemists out there who can further explain what...

Great question. I would not open this. Not that it will get better with age as wine absolutely can when stored correctly. But still the value may increase by a lot if unopened. I would reach out to Mount Gay and try to find out exactly what you have. Be completely honest and if it turns out to be something that ...

I so am back and did Barrilito and Visited the bar at Scryer in Old San Juan. The Barrilito 4star is stunning and got to fill my own bottle. Cool experience. My guide said the RumRatings developer had visited and he is a app user as well. Next trip for some of the out of town small Distillarys. Couldn't bring myself to do Bacardi. Super nice people in PR!...

I also have run into the same situation. Still, the competition is worthy and some out there are worthy! I have taken a liking to Thomas Tew. Those guys are doing a fantastic job and will become noteworthy to say the least. Check my review for them. On the other hand South Hollow, Cape Cod, was terrible and a complete rip off. But that's part of the journey! Cheers! ☠⛵...

cowboykidd: Here is some more reading material for you prior to shelling out big bucks for one pour of the original Black Tot. Advance research always pays off and fellow cruise ship passengers were always amazed at how much I knew about each port. This first one is a fine creation as seen from all of the most knowledgeable reviewers, but it is nowhere near like the original. I could never find ...

Kevin: Before I drive 25 miles to Total Wine, I always check their website to see what is in stock. Then I bring my list with no intentions of buying anything else. Most of them are now repeat purchases with a few new arrivals. Since I don't have a smart phone and refuse to get one (long story), I have to do my research from my desktop computer at home. I have driven all the way home to research ...

Glad that you fared well. Now you deserve one of your very best rums!!! Last year, thanks to lots of rum, I slept right on through Hurricane Ida with 110 mph winds. I woke up to see the hellish damage the next day, but very little to my own house. Being without power for 76 hours on 100 degree days was an absolute nightmare that I am lucky to have survived. No power means no gasoline to get out o...

Out of the expensive rums costing $60 US or more, only 7 rated as excellent buys and 25 rated as good buys. The first group went all the way up to $83 US and the second group went all the way up to $150 US. So many of the pricey rums wound up just being good buys instead of excellent buys. Fifty rums wound up in my top 11 percent of my rankings, with 40 percent of those costing me $60 to $150 US e...
