I guess it depends on how expensive a rum you would go for to make the cake. Flavor is also a key component in the equation of the what is? A light rum such as most Cuban runs provide subtle rum characteristics and a more mild flavor. A Demerara rum is a more full bodied, heavier rum due to the use of pot still distillation. A Jamaican rum is the quintessential whirlwind of flavor and FUNK. T...

Hello rum lovers! I have recently stumbled across a bottle of Saint James 2001 at my local store while searching for a gift for my friend. The description of the rum provided by the store says it is a limited edition release and each bottle is numbered, but I wasn't able to confirm this claim. Does anyone know how many bottles of this have been released or at least whether they are numbered (and ...

That's a tough one. I've been to mallorca twice and didn't see much in the way of rum beyond the standard party brands. On mainland Spain I did find some cachique rums which have good reps, you might find some in mallorca. I also found some good French agricol rums which might be worth getting. My rule when travelling is to buy brands I can't get at home that are in the same style as I like or fro...

I agree your best bet is a Cuban rum, Havana is a good brand so is Santiago de cuba. You can also see if you can find any afrohead rum. I haven't tried them but they get good ratings...

The perceived "smoothness" of alcohol like rum is often correlated to the following: * how light/heavy the rum is. The more a rum contains other volatile compounds that passed through the distillation that are not ethanol, the heavier it is by definition. These other non-ethanol compounds are called "cogeners", and some of them are strictly unwanted guests responsible for hangover and off-flavo...

Under normal conditions, 40% ABV booze acts as a preservative and disinfectant, killing any bacterial/fungal/whatever growth in the bottle. However, the ABV may decrease with time, until the concentration is low enough to allow said growth - either to evaporation (improperly sealed bottle), or dilution (somebody drinks from the bottle and tops it up with water so that you won't notice). Or...

Hi Sophie , I also have a bottle of the NZ last tot navy rum which I bought over with me. I bought it for $100 but its got to be worth at least double that. You could try listing it on Gumtree or Ebay but your meant to have a liquor license. Good luck , regards Martin....

Hey Tommaso, good comment, I'm surprised it's a topic that hasn't been discussed on RR more before. Some people think that the discrepancy in calculating age is what holds rum back compared to other spirits that have more standard age listing guidelines. At the end of the day, for rum it seems to be that everything goes when it comes to age. In essence, drop a thimble of 24 year old rum into a hug...

I've been fortunate to have enjoyed the 2002 as well as a bottle of the Ambassador. Personally, for the expansive price difference to the Diplimatico Riserva Exclusiva, I did not feel the value was representative. The DRE (again, in my opinion) is one of the finest, well balanced and complex rums I've tasted, ranking as #1 in my top 5. Currently (oops) I finished off the Single Vintage 2002 I ...

It looks like there's a clear correlation between the climate and the effect on open bottles of spirits. Thankfully I live in Glasgow which means my rums are naturally kept in a refrigerated environment lol!...

Scott, I got the 16-20 gpl of added sugar amount for Stiggin's from the review by Earl Elliott. Some reviewers have their own testing kit for sugar. Others post amounts straight from Captain Jimbo's website. And you are right with Stiggin's not being on Captain Jimbo's list. Supposedly, the sugar testing kit can be ordered from him. As for me, I just quit buying sugar bombs and overly sweetened...

I agree. When I first got a bottle 5 years ago Zaya was excellent, one of my favorite rums back then. About 2 years ago my stash ran out and I bought a new bottle...and it tasted very very off...like a bunch of syrup with vanilla extract. Itβs not horrific like Kraken is too me, but itβs a very far cry from what it used to be. What a shame....

Basically anything produced and bottled on Barbados and Jamaica should have no added sugar (be wary of rum sourced from Jamaica and bottled elsewhere, like that horrible Canadian Screech). Of those, I particularly recommend anything from Four Square distillery on Barbados, and from Hampden Estate on Jamaica. Moreover, whatever you buy from Luca Gargano from Velier will be unadulterated. There ...

Tommaso, here is one more highly recommended rum for you - the 12 year old from Ron Centenario from Costa Rica. Forget the lower and higher aged ones from this distiller as this one is as perfect as one can get. The reason that it did not make into my top 30 initially is because of it's $37 US price tag. Just like tequila aficionados, value is factored into the final score on my rums. However, aft...

I tried the Red Wine Cask Special Edition and found it fairly sweet. I would estimate the sugar content is between 25 to 39 GPL. It's been a couple of years since I had this rum, but my overall impression was that the 21 year old is a smoother rum....but is also much sweeter. At $120 Canadian, I have decided to pass on the recent variations offered in the Ontarion Liquor Stores. Just my opinion....

No, it's not your imagination. We have a choice of either heavily wooded or overly sugared. One has to really search through these reviews to find the right balance. Way back when, the coopers union in the Kentucky and Tennessee area wound up getting a law passed that a barrel could only be used once to age bourbon or whiskey because it is "unsanitary" to use them again. As a result, there are ...
