Hi there, I'm in Naples Florida this week and looking for a good rum bar. Haven't found one that stands out while searching - suggestions? Any rum raters up for a drink while I'm in town?...

Update: I finally found another bottle of Carat Vieja 18 and they seem to have solved the problem by creating a cork that does not fit nearly as tight as my first bottle. That first bottle had a cork that required twisting off, but was still too tight when corking it back up....

Diplomatico 2000 is available at West Vancouver just off 16th and Marine Drive it's a beautiful smooth rum. As far as Zaya goes they also carry the new version which is the fifth version of Zaya in the last 4 years. I have tried them all. The Old wicker sleeve is still the best. The label is black and gold. The new one also has a wicker sleeve on the top but to distinguish it from the old one, it ...

Been gravitating towards the drier rum spectrum latley myself. I’ve been really hitting the Flor de Cana 12, Smith and Cross, Appleton 12, Clement VSOP and Denizen Merchant’s Reserve recently. The Denizen is a blend of Martiniquie and Jamaican rums meant to mimic the old Wray and Nephew rum used in the OG Mai Tai. However, I may be in the minority here, but I really like sipping this one just as m...

It can be many things - added sugar that came out of the solution, glycerol, fragments of the cork (sometimes, the bottler uses artificial cork that is not resistant to alcohol and dissolves on contact), or other impurities from poorly controlled bottling process. Rum should not contain any such thing, so I would advise to return the bottles - I did it once with an expensive bottle containing ...

Charles: Mezan rums have been on my wish list for quite some time, but they cannot be shipped to where I live. I am also not willing to drive 400 miles or more one way just to pick up more rums. Now, when concert season reopens in spring, a good gig will get me near one of the Total Wine stores who carry Mezan and quite a few others that I cannot get here. TW has too many monopolies on brands, ...

I went to a Duppy Share tasting in London. Nice local owners who know their rum and put quite a bit of time into nice branding. More of a mixer it seems but I think decent tasting on its own as well. I recall they had some kind of rationale for the rums they mixed but can’t quite remember why at the moment. I’d say give it a shot if anything because it’s a small pretty local company trying to get ...

I admit that I'm not much of a rum drinker. I was restocking my bar on account of the holidays and wanted something general purpose (mixable as well as straight-drinkable). I saw this and thought it looked even more authentic than Bacardi gold, mainly due to all the seals and fancy writing on the bottle and, of course, the bat. I paid a little over $20 for it. Would I have been better off with som...

That's easy! Since the coquito is Puerto Rican eggnog, you should use the most popular Puerto Rican white rum, which is Don Q Cristal. It is also the highest rated Puerto Rican white rum on this site with rums having more than 1 rating. This rum will add no additional flavors nor will it give a hangover. Now if you want to add some tropical flavors, use Plantation Artisanal 3-Star. If you want ...

Sugar cane colas are in my opinion the best way to go. Coca cola made in Mexico are made with sugar cane. It is available from most Costco’s in the US and comes in a glass bottle. Many colas from Italy are made from cane sugar as well but some of these are sweeter than Coke, experiment and enjoy!...

Paul B - The deterioration of flavor happens not because of the sugar itself, but because the producers who sugar their rum often bottle it underproof to achieve that desirable "smooth" flavor. See this page: http://thefatrumpirate.com/hydrometer-tests-2 El Dorado lists 28.5% ABV versus the declared 40%. Since the flavor and aromatic compounds are diluted in alcohol, and not water, less alco...

Yes, that’s right, it's not in generally the rum produced in Barbados, it's the rum who is bottled in Barbados which is not allowed to be sugared. Great stuff !...
