Thanks for this information. I think it's ok, 20g is a good value. I like also sweetened rums. If El Dorado or Zacapa has to write "spirit" on their lable, it's fine for me. If they change the taste because of this regulation, well then I will buy some of the old bottles. Everything changes, the rum taste will certainly adapt. I hope rum remains affordable and diverse....

I use bread and water for tasting. They are good neutralizer. But I would be grateful for some dry fruits. To compare them with the flavors of the rum. Dry coconut, apricot, fig, date, apple, pineapple....

The taste difference is so subtle that I often wonder if the XO Insolent is worth the extra cost. I now keep extra bottles of the Dictador 20 on hand at all times....

The legendary Don Pancho has a part in the creation of both. I normally shy away from spirits with the names of non-spirited celebrities associated with them, but Bruno Mars made a major effort of five years to find the right white rum for his Selvarey....

Jago: After checking www.wine-searcher.com, there are several places in your neighboring Germany that carry this rum. Personally, I have not had much luck with Brugal rums since their Anejo is rated as my all time worst ever. However their 1888 was fairly good despite the strong presence of sherry barrel aging. Good luck!...

I agree that the Quorhum 30-Year is amazing. If you like that one, you might also try the Ron Centenario 20 and/or 25 year rums, which are my personal go to rums, since I can't find the Quorhum 30 in the US....

I always like to start with a neat sip, then (based on the burn, or lack) experiment. I've learned that some spirits open up remarkably just from sitting in the glass for 10, 15 minutes if I have the patience... the ethanol burns off faster than the good stuff. Otherwise, I usually start with a few drops of water and go from there. (If something is high proof, I'll probably use a bit more water...

I was going to suggest Total Wine and Specs, but you already mentioned those. Some of those stores keep their very expensive ones under lock and key, so ask one of the clerks about those. Other than these two chains, you probably don't have much to choose from on premium rums....
