Thatβs the point: All spirits made from sugarcane are so different, as long they are properly handcrafted. Industrial mass-production mostly tastes the same, like Ba.... and many cheap more. That's the way who makes the rum journey so interesting and you stay curios.. The Velier rums I mentioned before are all molasses rum and extremely different....

Hi guys, I'm a little bit in the same situation. I'm a beginning rum-drinker and was looking for a good way to rate my rums. I found following link which gives me a good indication on how to rate rums correclty: https://refinedvices.com/the-rating-system This will enable me to rate a rum correctly, without any personal preference or whatever....

Rene and Immiketoo: Thank you so much for the both of you!!! There is no wind at all in the eye of a hurricane, but one cannot stay there for long since the lower eye wall will be soon coming to slap one upside the head. It was a very nerve wracking experience and only a few evacuated because it was not supposed to have gained this much strength this late in the season. Global warming is to be...

Paul, I am happily comfortable here in the Aegean, where we are protected from that kind of craziness! Now, impending war with the Turks, thatβs another matter entirely. Curiously, rum helps there too...lol. I have been on a sailboat here in pretty choppy seas, and I hated it. I canβt imagine riding out a hurricane on a boat of any size! (Tips hat in respect)...

I donβt have that many solera rums in my bar anymore. Those that remain are all from Oliver & Oliver, QRM30, Opthimus 25 (Port & Whiskey finish), Unhiq and Cubaney 25-30. They are all quite sweet, but I like them nonetheless. Some other non solera Latin favorites are the Ron Zafra and the Malecon Rare Proof series, the latter are also quite sweet but the high alcohol content of about 50%...

The rum tasting glass from Total Wines sounds very interesting, but I can also see the issues DFT.TX mentioned, as it seems a bit large. My personal favorite glass thus far is the simple Stolzle "Weinland Whisky small" https://www.stoelzle-lausitz.com/en/100-00-14-whisky-klein (I prefer the "small" to the regular size)....

@ vomi1011 Thanks for the suggestion, at least the hydrometer gives it 0-5gpl which is a step forward in my book. So I might give it a try. Dark rums are not a problem at all, but sofar I am not much of a fan of Guyana rums and I think that is the main issue here, apart from the added sugar. So maybe I should get me a dry demerara from Mezan or so first, just to get a better feel for these rum...

vomi, I'd prefer "material" option for two reasons: you can add sugar cane honey (used by Zacapa and Dictador) and you can list several materials if the final product is a blend. I'd allow the option "unreported" as an initial value for all the categories. In the distillation section, instead of "mixed', i would allow to fill in more than one letter to specify what techniques were used for t...

Kirk & Sweeney is made from Bermudez rum from a distillery on Dominican Republic. DomRep rums are not very heavy, because all three distilleries (BarcelΓ³, BermΓΊdez and Brugal) uses multi-column distillation. What we know about multicolumn-distillation is: "These large factory-sized stills use several columns which typically produce a distillate of more than 95% ABV. Such rums are characte...

Paul I get what your saying and to me this would partly apply to a bottle like milionario XO, but I think your claim is a bit over the top as this is a very subjective matter. Some of best bottle designs (fx. Velier) also, happen to contain some the best rum around. This is my opinion, that others might disagree on, which kinda underlines what Iβm trying to say. But props to you for taking up the ...

DFW.TX: In the last few years, I have had to travel long distances, up to 400 miles to get rums that had been previously unavailable where I live. Since Total Wine finally opened a store only 50 miles away, I no longer have to make those rum runnings to buy more than a dozen bottles at a time. I would rate the first 3-4 almost immediately and then do the rest in the following days. No point in ...

vom1011: The Plantation Guatemala XO is nowhere to be found in my area. Actually, the only bottle that I had was bought at a favorite liquor store 200 miles away as the only bottle. When I have a rum that is rated six or less it just sits on another shelf until I get invited to the right party, usually a tailgate that is BYOB and bring it and leave it for others. Obviously I won't bring crap rum to a rum party or an evening of fine sipping, but if its a party with a bunch of other people who don't care about their alcohol that is perfect because then they can get lit and the ...
