Paul: Total Wine always carries the line of Ron Cartavio and there are plenty of those stores in your neck of the woods. Their 12 Year solera is priceless, but needs to breathe for about 30 minutes. Their XO has way too much added sugar for my tastes. By the way, are you the same Air Force Sargent that I knew in Biloxi way back in 1985?...

in Sweden an Appleton 21 costs β¬ 127.50. I have created an excel sheet where I keep track of the approximately 200 most interesting varieties with the five cheapest online shops in EU, which I check when it is time to replenish my stock. When it comes to Appleton 21 the cheapest prices in Europe is found in Italy where you can find it below β¬ 70 online. The shipping costs will be quite high...

I don't know, it's a part of mind work too. In a blind tasting, would you rate a rum that costs 30.- differently than if the same rum cost 120.- ? How much does price, rarity or expectation influence our taste ? I think a lot ! But if you taste an ED Albion, you will get absolutely disappointed because all the flavours get obscured by sugar. The same thing with the A.H.Riise Black Edition. Some ...

Gosh, this is starting to feel like a virtual rum drinking party from all across the world!!!! My days as a position trader in the stock market during 2000 also inspired me to not invest in things that take up lots of room (like rum) and only may bring a profit decades down the road. My record profit in short time was buying a tech stock, going to the grocery, and selling it for a $65 net profi...

Falcon: I had to switch from sweet rums to dry rums out of necessity for those two reasons mentioned earlier. At first, I hated having to do this. Then as I got used to dry rums and being able to add anything that I wanted to them, I could no longer appreciate those original sugar bomb favorites. Now I restrict myself to rums with no more than 28 gpl of added sugar, with Dos Maderas 5x5 being t...

Whisky is better studied as the interest and community is greater. There are not that much studies about rum. Since all three distillates are alcohols, I think they behave similarly. Everyone can believe what he want. Ultimately, we won't notice the changes I think....

RonRumHead, That was bad by Flor de Cana, but they have at least written the average age on the label. Zacapa 23 for example has just an average age of just over 6 years not written on the label. When it comes to Spanish styled rum I don't really trust any company....

Thanks vomi1011: This is interesting reading even for experienced rum drinkers like me. I especially liked the chapter on glasses. However, I can sum up most of what Captain Jimbo wrote in just four words, "Drink what you like". The in depth analysis of these articles will more than likely blow most of the minds of the new rum drinkers. Therefore, I propose my very simple approach! Stick wit...

That is right, but it's also true that a pot still distillation produces more flavors than a multi-column distillation. If we only look at it from an economic point of view, there would be only the cheapest Bacardi rum. And how tasty is the cheapest Bacardi Rum? There is also another economic point. You can dilute a high abv spirits yourself to the point where you can enjoy it (the manufacturer d...

In addition, I recommend salted banana chips for all Caribbean rums and unsalted roasted peanuts for matured Jamaica rums. As kudzey and Pirate mentioned is chocolate perfect for rum, I love the high % cacao ones, and truly great with Dictador Rum. Goes also well with a grilled steak, I mean both, chocolate and Dictador. ...

Sounds like it's more art than rum for drinking. We know almost nothing about this 40y old rum. "The liquids are carefully chosen and mixed by our master blender, as he has chosen the best of the oldest vintages to give you the truest taste of our age-old DICTADOR." Dictador The Best of 1977 costs around 180β¬ with 40% abv and is also 40y old. I would rather buy some Caroni bottlings of Velier. ...

I think that St. Lucia 1931 is also of the no sugar added category (with the exception of a few annual released ones, from the numbered series). Mostly the No81/2012 and the Chairman's Reserve standardized structure from 2018 onwards. Great stuff to drink and also, a collector's item by now....

Then there's another thing to take into account, from the producers side of things - and apologies in advance if it is teaching you to suck eggs. It may interest others who don't know about production. I should say that EU law also is applicable for us here in UK, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same in USA and elsewhere.
