Earl: When I first started this rum journey more than 3 years ago, I started out like most other newbies to premium rums and stocked up on the sugar bombs and sweet rums. I was so proud of my collection and expected it to last more than six months. The longest that I ever had any spirit last was six months for a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year Bourbon (back when it was only $70 instead of tho...

About to know which rum is reviewed.Unfortunately, people are not careful enough when they publish their reviews. So it’s unfortunately very common that reviews are published under wrong image. It would be good if everyone was more careful and also added a picture of the current bottle. I’ve had a conversation about this with Andy and he can’t move these reviews, he can only headlight it to the ...

Harrie, Yes, the same goes for me. Price is definitely an important factor. When I build my Rumbar I want to have at least one bottle from most of the brands or/and islands in the Caribbean and it can’t always be their most expensive rum. About white rum I can recommend to test the Jamaican Overproof’s especially Rum Fire, the Agricole’s Blanc (Right now is the Montebello 50% the best I’ve...

Hi toggrikk, Not sure if you find my suggestions useful but these are some of my findings about el Presidente. I had the best results with equal mixture of Appleton 12yo rare blend (not the same as ordinary 12yo) and havana Club 7 yo. I used dry Martini vermouth (now I think lillet could do better) Cointreau liquor (but I think your choice is better) and a basic sweet grenadine from some polish ...

@Stefan Persson; You are right that the price for the 10yo Seale is not excessive but what I meant was that the making of that bottle is more expensive than a plain one and if I have to pay extra for a fancy bottle it better be good looking (like indeed the CR 1931 bottle or the wonky bottle holding Conde de Cuba 11yo)....

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. Stefan, thanks for redirecting me to that forum topic too. So far I found I don't like the taste of fermented cane, is it characteristic to the two rums I drank or is it typical to all Agricole? ...

vomi, your damn right, rum is getting more expensive every year, it's not a good thing for us. But that's one side of the medal. The other side is, that it is possible to buy hundreds of gorges and outstanding rums nowadays. Back in the mid '90 there was nearly no sipable rum available here in Switzerland (I don't know how it was in other parts of the world), I always took a nice bottle from Ca...

Interesting topic Paul B. I agree with you on the Goslings, the Don Q Anejo, and the Zacapa Negra. The rest I have not tried, but if they are in the $100 CDN range, then I will be sure to stick to my wish list. In terms of value for taste, I would put Appleton 21 on that list as well as the Kirk & Sweeney 23, both of which are well over the $100 mark in Ontario. Cheers! ...

Oh yes, I've already tried 6 month old distillates that were matured in stainless steel tanks. They taste too metallic for me, like white Bacardys for example, I don't particularly like them. This is really the cheapest solution to let the rum rest for a few months and then sell it straight away. That’s what the big producers do. The rum is good for mixing, but they also use wooden barrels for age...

Hornet, It’s correct, most aged rums are aged in former bourbon barrels, but some is aged in former Whisky or Cognac barrels. Some also use new oak barrels. My advice to you is to look for rum that has been double matured where the second maturation been done in former Madeira, Port or Sherry casks. Which one you choose depends on how sweet you want your rum. The driest is those that been...

Both are sweetened and have different origins The Original is made from Barbados rum, but not really a rum because of the low Vol., just 35% (to call it rum it needs min. 37%), with natural flavours and a sugar contain of 40 gr/l. The XO is made from Panama rum, 40% Vol. and finished in sherry casks, sugared with 19 gr/l. In my taste, two completely different rum, the Original as a dessert, XO ...

Yea, Paul, I think the wisdom about esters and the organic chemistry it's more a distiller or alchemist thing. Keep on digging. It's not really much information to find in the net. I think Cocktail Wonk is quite a good source. I'm curious about my two ester bombs in my collection, one is a National Rums of Jamaica Long Pond TECC with 1500-1700 gr/hlpa and a Habitation Velier Hampten C<>H ...

And how one even measure "overatedness"? Isn't it the same way as saying "my personal opinion greatly differs from the generally accepted one", only hinting that my opinion is where the "objectivity" lies? And since rum assessment is highly subjective, the answer will probably vary greatly from person to person. In my opinion, there is the Old Pascas Barbados rum, which is awful (and imo not even ...

I have been accumulating way too many spare corks. Then I ran into a problem whereby none of them fit one that fell apart on a recent purchase. The bottle was Kirk & Sweeney 18 Year Old, which has now been discontinued. I had to use a cork screw to get it out and it came apart in pieces. Out of about four dozen corks stashed away, not one of them fit. So I had to transfer the rum to one of the...

Rene: I assure you that the cork problem that I encountered here was not caused in the work place. Two corks were good and both were synthetic with no coating. These were found on Sajous and Casimir 2018. The two bad corks were both real cork with a "special" white coating. This chemical reaction is what ruined both. These were on Le Rocher and Vaval. I was not going to let the cat out of the b...
