Rumtrinker, I think that that over sweetened rum, which ain’t rum according to the EU definition can be really good if the sweetness is balanced with an higher ABV, for example the Malecon Rare Proofs. But overall I’m not a fan of this type of rum, which actually should be called spirit drink....

Thank you! Have to look into white rums more, especially the Jamaican ones. Had a glass of Wray and Nephew with ginger beer ("white and stormy"?) today and that was quite an experience. I like it far better than many of my other rums (and whiskies) that cost more. As for Havana Club: Do you think that the Seleccion de Maestros will significantly change how I look at this type of rum, as comp...

It's the same liquid. The bottle was redesigned in 2016. There are three versions of this XO bottle. Two old bottles, one with glas and one with wood lid and the new round bottle. Maybe you can translate this site: https://www.rumpirat.de/ron-zacapa-centenario-wer-hat-den-durchblick/ There is also an old bottle without solera on the lable, this one could be different. Because they changed t...

Yes, so the general consensus is most rums can be pinned to at least the region or distillery. That was my general feeling as well. Very cool to hear the different experiences from everyone. Thanks for the responses! - Jimmy Cliff: your wife’s idea of a Christmas present is pretty damn awesome! Cheers!...

I’ve now tasted the English Harbour 2014 High Congeners Series 6yo that was one of the bottles in my first post, then untasted. I made the tasting back to back against the Velier 2012 English Harbour and rated it a 9. Overall it’s very intense, strong and complex and I can really recommend it especially if you feel sorry that you missed the Velier 2012 English Harbour edition you can here get a ...

I disagree with the LCBO's stranglehold on importing alcohol. If they want to control access in the market why don't they then give us access to all brands. I had wanted to buy Foursquare, but can only buy it in the states right now, with a closed border....

I enjoyed Appleton the most. Cruzan was nice too. Those were the only 2 I was on. Appleton gives the full layout of how rum is aged and made. Cruzan a bit more simplistic, but still worth it if you're on the island. Cheers! ...

You would love the old Dictador Insolent, it had this coconut/marshmallow aroma. But the new one lost this, I talked to some people who tasted the new version. This aroma is seldom in pure rums. You are also right with Plantation XO, it has sweet coconut in the taste, I think this could come from sugar syrup in combination with young bourbon wood. It's the same with Kaniche XO (also a Barbados rum...

Rene: I think what happens is that most of the expensive rums wind up in Europe because rum drinkers over here in the USA simply won't buy them. Where I live, it's all about craft beers, bourbons, and vodkas. Rums have taken a back seat to these popular sellers. If I do spot an expensive rum for sale, I can almost guarantee that it will still be there a month later or more. For the 38 rums that...

Calazan Reserva 10 Year is a fairly new arrival to my collection. Presently, and to the best of my knowledge, it is only available in Florida except for the panhandle. It is a relatively dry rum from Venezuela. When I first got it, I ranked it in the lower part of my 7 ratings. In just two weeks time, it has risen to the upper part of my 7 ratings and almost earning my 8 rating with the chance to ...

Rene: I may still be a part of the discussions, but now at a bare minimum. The road calls out to me again, but this time with absolutely no more rums to look for. In two weeks, I will be returning to a place that I promised myself to return to for more than one day. That promise was made more than 17 years ago. Unfortunately, my dog will have to stay back home in the kennel this time. No matter...

To Bonandy and all others, I really hope that the Eastern have been good so far and that it will remain the same way. I haven’t tasted anything special this Eastern, just finishing a bottle of Six Saints and a bottle of Westerhall No10, they’re both on the 7 level and none of them will be repurchased....

I’ve found a few sweet rums that I keep going back to: Centenario 20 and 25. 30 is also good but to be honest I actually prefer 25, and it’s MUCH less expensive. Raku has amazing sweet rums. I’ve had and enjoyed all three: their Dark, Spiced and Signature. The signature is almost syrupy! ...

My criterias are in my profile: 1. complexity, how many flavors are in the taste and how often do they change. 2. Intensity, how intensive and saturated are the flavors. High abv intensifies the flavors. I deduct points when I taste alcohol. 3. Balance, are there dominating flavors, how do they change in the initial, middle, finish, aftertaste. 4. Aging, how much wood influence, tannins, heavy...

There is a sad story behind this thread. Many people today, are mercilessly pushed against the wall while the institutions protecting the powers that be rummage through their pockets, since the wealthiest are no longer content with owning 95% of everything, but decided they will push it to 99%. The rest of the people sharing the rest of the resources find it harder and harder to make the ends meet...

Different suggestion: if you like sweet stuff, go for liqueurs and spiced rum. Cheap, sweet, jolly good fun of you are into that kind of thing. Other than that, I would second the nudge towards Guyanese Demerara rums. There definitely are runs out there that are more or less "sweet" without added sugar. Like with scotch whisky, which does not allow dosage, but nevertheless Glen Grant Majors Re...
