We have a blend of pot and column styles here. Distilled at the end of 2007 and tropical matured for ten years in ex-bourbon barrels before it was bottled in 2018 without filtration. The barrel made 346 bottles.
Smell: Noticeably a Foursquare but a very light one. I notice vanilla, light bourbon wood, dark barrel aromas with a little hazelnut. Behind some dried fruits. The smell is balanced between light and dark aromas. I can still perceive a light sweetness. That is a very light nose that leaves a connoisseur unimpressed.
Taste: Very thin start but nutty. Peanuts first come to mind with vanilla and light wood. The taste changes to paper and tannins. You can tell from the wood how strong the dilution is. In the middle the rum gets warmer and starts with dark wood aromas, orange zest and tannins. Dried fruits can be found in the background.
The finish is spicy and slightly astringent. I have the wooden barrel flavors with orange zest on the palate with plenty of dried fruit. This is what you expect from a Foursquare, but unfortunately it comes much too late.
I don't understand why CDI chose 43%. The Doorlys XO already has a more intense start and gives a more powerful impression. The rum only really takes off towards the end.
