Barbancourt 5 Star Reserve Especiale 8-Year rum

Barbancourt 5 Star Reserve Especiale 8-Year

Haiti | Aged

Barbancourt 5 Star Reserve Especiale 8-Year Rum is agricultural, meaning it's produced from fermented sugar cane juice rather than the more typical molasses. The sugar cane juice is double distilled and aged for eight years in Limousin oak barrels.

Dupré Barbancourt created the Barbancourt rum recipe in 1862 in Haiti, where the rum is still produced today. A French national, Barbancourt incorporated traditional French methods including double-distillation in the process.

Tasted at Laka Lono 8/19/21
Notes indicate that this had a sweet taste and that our discussion was mostly around the confusing naming system for these rums, involving both years and stars
UPDATE: Also entered in my passport on 1/31/22 with notes that this was a little more agricole in flavor than I prefer. Interestingly, I did give it the same rating as the first time.

I'm not always into Agricoles but this one was drinkable. Although hella affordable, I probably won't be getting this again for sipping- but would definitely not say no if someone offered it.
It was good I just can't put my finger on anything that WoW'ed me.

In cocktails, this does an OK job. Neat, however, this rhum does not have a pleasant nose and the first sip is pretty overwhelming with a medicinal/chemical taste. Second sip is not as bad, but still not great. Wouldn't buy again.

My favorite rum for sailing, drink as ti-punch: 1,5 Oz rum, 3/4 Oz cane syrup, 1/4 Oz (or less) of fresh pressed lime juice, find the sweet spot of lime juice where a coconut flavour appears, it’s pure magic

Good Aroma. Very warm flavors of wood barrel, spices brown sugar, and a nice vegetal note at the end. A great choice.

I have only tried agricole rum a couple times and was not impressed at all. I gave it one more shot with Barbancourt and I am done with agricole. This rum has a bit of a smokey aroma and nothing else. More gold than amber color and a flat alcohol taste mixed with smoke and a bit of sweetness, and just not mixed in a good way. Gave a 4 and not a 3 because did use also as mixer and was not bad at all but I really prefer rum neat or on the rocks.

Tasted at Laka Lono on 5/11/21. Rich amber in color. Boozy aroma of acetone and pineapples. Woody and bitter. Herbal woodruff. A dessicating finish to the mouthfeel. Very unique and pleasant.

This is my first French style rum. It's ok. Mostly just spicey.

Molasses notes and smooth finish very aseptic on the tongue

Buttery cinnamon vanilla
Suggest lemon and lime wedge served neat
