Kept trying rums classified as just having "a little bit of funk" (Coruba Dark, Plantation 3 star, etc.) and found myself wanting a bit more. Decided to finally bite the bullet on S&C to see if I truly was a fan of the funk. In short, I am. This rum is a game changer. It adds a whole new element to tiki cocktails and I'm hooked. I reserve 9 ratings for the neat sippers (haven't found the holy grail 10 yet) but this is on the very high end of ratings for a mixing rum. Think I will permanently keep this stocked from now on.
Tough to review really. I can see where this rum would be black and white to many imbibers. You either love it or hate it. It has this strangely appealing nose of licorice and turpentine! I do like licorice! I sure hated Hampden Estate 8 year. This reminds me of that rum. It is slightly better. I don't buy rum to mix with!. I use the ones I don't prefer to sip as mixers. I am a Scotch drinker historically. You don't mix Scotch! Strong spirits with funky peaty tastes really appeal to me. I was not put off by the burn or the "funk" I enjoyed it. But I am going to actually put this in the grey at a 7.4 I don't hate it. I don't find it harsh at all to sip straight but the taste is not my favorite Better on ice with a couple of drops of water than neat. Strong, yes. Complex, definitely. Smooth?......still deciding, but it isn't harsh. Flavorful? Not really. More like interesting or intriguing Sweet....NO WAY! I definitely wouldn't call it great. The finish could be much better. This is one I will try over the course of a month and edit my review as needed. It is likely an acquired taste like islay Scotch. Islay's have become my favorites but it took a bit of time. One aspect I will not change over time and many tastings is that this is definitely good, this is definitely different, but this is definitely NOT a 10.
This rum carries a heavy punch and is full of complex flavors. Amazing smell. I simply Love it.
A staple of jamaican rums, Smith and Cross offers more that you could expect from It. Fantastic both for cocktails and for sipping, maybe on the rocks or with some water. Drinking it neat is a unique experience, but can be overwelming at first.
Perfect for making a funky pot still grog. I recommend adding a pinch of salt to the shaker. Really compliments the funk well.
Kick you in the crotch fantastic. Comes in with a bit of fire, but the finish is lasting and rich.
Funky Jamaican goodness with a strong ABV. This is the real deal. Great.
Rom fra Jamaica er bare noget andet end det jeg normalt er til. Ingen sukker tilsat gør at det bliver en anden smag, mangler sødmen. Men okay ift hvad jeg havde forventet.
a bit bitter..and it got ATTITUDE

The smell is rich, sugary, heavy molasses.
"It leaves a long lasting tingle on the tongue and in the roof of your mouth. ."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

If you have ever caught yourself thinking "Do I smell good cheese or sunstruck dumpster?" and you are excited to try the cheese- Smith and Cross is for you.
Hot ethanol dominates the aroma, but gives way a certain Chamoy character. Smokey, roasted papaya and passion fruit along with ethanol comprise the palate.
I enjoy this rum over ice. It makes a truly impeccable Mai Tai. I should try this in a Zombie.
