Guatemala | Aged | 40% ABV

Ron Zacapa XO Rum is produced in the highlands of Guatemala where it is distillled from fresh cane juice. The rum is then aged from 6 to 23 years at 7544 feet above sea level at 62 °F (17 °C) using the solera process. The solera aging process incorporates barrels that previously held American whiskeys, sherries, wines and Cognac

The unique Ron Zacapa XO glass decantur features an impression of a woven band around the middle, which is in reference to the original hand woven palm leaf petate bottle cover that covered the bottle

Really nice and rounded rum, smooth feeling and perfect sweetness

Well. I was expecting more. It's not as well rounded as one would be expecting. It's good? Yes. Great? Not really. Worth the money? Doubt so.

And if I was reviewing this spirit as a Cognac, I would have rated it as a 9!

But I am reviewing this as a Rum, since that is what it is represented to be. And on that score it fails miserably! Indeed, I would have rated it even lower than a 6, but it is a fine quality spirit, to be sure, so my final rating reflects that.

But if you are wishing to drink a fine Rum, this is not it! You can barely taste the Rum, so overpowering was the effect of the Cognac Barrel, at the last of the aging process.

scent: first note is banana, followed by cofee and spices.

Taste: First comes very sweet aromas of some kind of sugar. Later the flavours develops into a mixture of spices, banana and licourice.

Personal score: 8.5-8.8

This is an amazing rum, medium+ in taste, richness and darkness. I guess it only lacks a small bit of complexity to reach a higher score. In my opinion Zacapa XO is better than the Zacapa Royal.

Podobny chutovy profil ako klasicka Zacapa 23 solera, ale je vyvazenejsi, uhladenejsi. Vyborne chuti, len skoda, ze je aj dvojnasobne drahsi.

Velvety, smooth, complex and satisfyingly deserty. For me the cola flavors dominate with the vanilla notes playing supporting roles.

Nekem nagy csalódás volt ez a rum. A 23 éves az egyik kedvencem, viszont én ebben a rumban jobban érzem a szesz ízt, mint bármi mást... Jégre öntve lágyabb lesz, de nekemúgy se jött be igazán. Azért majd adok neki még egy esélyt.

This rum is a gorgeous, ruddy toffee color, perhaps a shade more amber than the standard 23. The nose, unsurprisingly, evokes more age, as well, with deeper notes of aged wine and seasoned oak that pair well with elements of dried fig, sticky prune, dark roast coffee, and creamy milk chocolate. The palate is still bright with all that citrusy, sherry-driven fruit, although a rich layer of dark brown sugar underpins things, adding a silky depth and gentle complexity. Coffee notes, nutty and lightly spiced, dominate the mid-palate before a reprisal of fruit on the long finish, this time more Cognac-driven with golden stone fruits and some poached pear. All told, it’s only a bit more impressive than the standard Zacapa 23, but that’s still saying something. A great special occasion sipping rum. If you can spare the shelf space.
