Good soft but slightly smoky smell, almost no smell of alcohol. It also smelled a little sweet, but it didn't taste like it. On the palate, a slightly smoky taste of oak cask whiskey
I must admit that I didn't expect much from this rum, but it was all the more of a surprise. Barbados 8 YO from Dutch independent bottler 1731 comes from the famous Barbados distillery Foursquare bottled at 46% ABV. The blend of rums has been aged for at least 8 years in oak bourbon barrels. The rum is not flavored or colored in any way.
Bottle: Ordinary and quite unremarkable.
Colour: Light gold.
Nose: Very pleasant, rather drier. The nose has scent of vanilla, spices (cinnamon, cloves, pepper), cocoa, dried fruit (apples), green unripe banana, tobacco and oak.
Taste: It is strong, dry to slightly sweet, creamy and not aggressive at all. There is vanilla, bitter gingerbread, caramel, green unripe banana, dried unsweet fruits, bitter coffee and oak in the flavour.
Finish: Medium to long.
Summary: For me, this is a perfect dry to slightly sweet rum. The 46% ABV content is to the benefit of the taste, but the rum does not burn unnecessarily. It is smooth and very pleasant to drink. For about 36 EUR it is a big and pleasant surprise for me.
The overall rating: 9 out of 10
Nice smooth sipper, good with some ice, not so sweet, soft afterburn and hint of oils in taste.
A good find Barbados goodness with the notes of a very young FS rum . Oak and chocolate present with a slight orange after taste which moves it higher in rating .
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I saw these 1731 rums in fancy gift boxes at my local clearance store. So I came back home to check reviews on these. I really wanted to try their Cuba/Dominican Republic ones, but sale of those is strictly forbidden in the USA because of the Cuban embargo. My next best choice would be this one from Barbados at $48 US.
I never saw anyone in a liquor store reading all of the fine print on gift boxes, because all of this is only designed to sell the product. I never read all of this until I brought my bottle home. It turns out that this is a blend of Foursquare rums aged at least 8 years and sold by an independent bottler in the Netherlands. The gift box is also nicer than the bottle itself, which is rather plain.
When I poured some in the snifter, it's pale yellow color defied it's stated age. It looked like a 3 year old rum, but tasted far better. In addition to that, it did not have any of the strong bourbon notes typically found in Foursquare rums. My first inkling was that these bourbon barrels had to have been ones with a very minimal or no char. However, there was no way for me to really find out. All I can say is that the taste buds of this independent bottler must be vastly different from Mr Seale. And hats off to this bottler! It is well known that I hate excessive bourbon notes in my rum and this one has none.
Overall, I would rate this rum as a high 7. With this price, I now consider it to be an excellent buy. However, I probably won't be able to find another bottle where I live. I am also too lazy to do my usual photo setup in my back yard for rums of this caliber.
